Acton Seniors Centre members enjoyed Town's volunteer fête By JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre Fifteen seniors and their guests celebrated their birthdays at the Birthday Tea this month. Following the cake and ice cream, two young people, Courtney McIsaac and Kevin Parrish, entertained us with singing Happy Birthday followed up by a selection of songs. Kevin not only sang but played the guitar. They received an appreciative round of applause following their songs. Maria Sallay told me the art class held their last official instruction class this week, but will still meet at 1 p.m. on Wednesday afternoons to enjoy painting. They invite anyone who enjoys painting to join them. There is no charge other than the regular $1 drop-in fee. All you budding watercolour artists don't hide your talents, but come share with others. (You do have to be a member of the Centre to participate.) We have many volunteers at the Acton Seniors Centre (we couldn't run it without them) and 30 managed to join the many volunteers from Halton Hills at the volunteer recognition evening at the Gellert Centre last Tuesday. We were welcomed by Mayor Rick Bonnette and many young members of the Georgetown Little Theatre who were dressed as superheroes. It was standing room only. There were lots of goodies and munchies. Everyone enjoyed dipping the fresh Ontario strawberries in the chocolate fountain. Everyone received a Halton Hills volunteer pin and a gingerbread or shortbread `superhero' cookie as we left. On Monday, 56 members, Red Hat Leathertown Lassies and friends descended on the Mohawk racetrack for dinner and the races. After dinner some slipped away to the slots, but I know everyone enjoyed themselves-- and hopefully some of us came home a little richer. Last week at Bid euchre there was a new face. Pat Mathieu who lives in Oshawa was visiting her sister Shirley Hunter. It was Betty Brewer's lucky day as she had the only mooner. Come to the Centre, there is always something happening and we have lots of social events, trips, programs, exercise classes, art classes and every Thursday members play cards, Fridays are taken up with shuffleboard, then lunch followed by bingo. If you are interested in the lunch please sign up earlier in the week so the lunch committee knows how much food to provide. The menu is always varied and delicious. We have a very energetic hiking group, but they will be having their summer picnic soon and will take a break for a couple of months.
