A greater-than-life-sized bronze statue of the late Canadian jazz pianist Oscar Peterson was unveiled in front of the National Art Centre, with Peterson's wife Kelly in attendance. Peterson died in December 2007. The statue was cast in Georgetown at Artcast, on Armstrong Ave. Kelly visited Artcast in mid-June to see the finished statue before it was shipped to Ottawa, to be installed at its permanent location. "It's a bit overwhelming to see him (Oscar) like this," said Kelly, "But it's so special to see the detail, and to know he'll be on display at the National Arts Centre." In addition to The Queen, Kelly said there will be an impressive array of guests at the unveiling, including Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen, as well as Governor General Michaëlle Jean and former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien Municipality of Halton Kelly Peterson, wife of the late jazz great Oscar Peterson, spends a quiet moment with the casting of Peterson which was cast at Artcast, on Armstrong Ave. The bronze statue was unveiled by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, yesterday (June 30) at the National Art Centre, in Ottawa. "All I can think is how Oscar would have reacted to all this recognition," said Kelly. "He'd have been overwhelmed by it all-- The Queen, the Prime Minister, all those special people-- when The Queen is at an event, the world watches. I'm so pleased that he has been honoured this way." The statue was created by sculptor Ruth Abernathy who is famous for her sculptures of pianist Glenn Gould, Ian Miller with Big Ben, and pro golfer Arnold Palmer-- all of which were cast at Artcast.
