Jay Fleming of Georgetown is that stranger. Today he thinks of Stefan Rinn of Bielefeld, Germany-- the man who received his bone marrow-- as his brother. Rinn's wife, Ulrike Schmiesing-Rinn, said that her husband had been diagnosed with leukemia in 2002 and underwent chemotherapy, but by 2007 he was "very tired, had no power, no energy" and was receiving weekly blood transfusions. His doctors told him he needed a bone marrow transplant to survive. "If he hadn't had it. I would be a widow now," said Schmiesing-Rinn. Fleming, a regular blood donor who had also registered to be a bone marrow donor through the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network received a call from Blood Services Canada in late 2007 and was asked to go for further blood testing as he could be a potential bone marrow match for a patient. Further testing revealed he was a 9/10 match, which is good, but not a 10/10 perfect match. The closer the match between the patient and the donor the better the outcome will be for the patient. Little Boo Boo Dan Frankian, owner of Hawkeye Bird and Animal Control Inc. and area resident Fiona Reid, who found "Little Boo Boo"-- an injured screech owl-- last December, were thrilled to see the bird released back to the wild Monday afternoon. Frankian said when he took the owl in (inset) it was "totally dehydrated," had eaten very little, if any, food in a while, had a sprained wing and an infection.
