Eastman took all of 15 minutes to write Whispers, a 40-line poem about bullying and gossip that earned her second place in the poetry contest. Mitchell's Realization of a Feeling, a 500-word piece about overcoming obstacles in life, was judged to be third best submission in the Grade 8 short-story contest. Both girls received a book with all of the contest-winning entries published and a small bursary for their efforts. Also in the photo is Centennial writing club coach Andrea Miersma.
