In Focus, September, 2010 4 Letter from In Focus Ah, September! For many, this month drags by as the mornings get cooler, the sunsets arrive earlier and the kids reluctantly haul themselves back to school. For me, however, September rushes by in a whirlwind of midways, cattle shows, crafts, petting zoos and education tents. For two back-to-back weekends in mid-September, Halton Hills celebrates its agricultural roots with the Georgetown and Acton Fall Fairs and I'll be at both of them. Growing up, I attended the Georgetown Fall Fair every year. My baseball finals were always held at the fairgrounds on Fall Fair Weekend, so my teammates and I would play a game, rush to the midway to grab a few snacks, play a few carnival games and take a few spins on the Tilt-A-Whirl before heading back to the diamond to play in the championship game...assuming we made it that far, of course. In fact, sometimes we were happier to lose in the semi-finals because that meant we could spend the rest of the day at the fair. When it comes to the Acton Fall Fair, I'm a relative newbie. (Confession time: I only started going because I had to cover it for In Focus). Although I don't have the same history with the Acton Fall Fair as I do with the Georgetown one, that little fair has earned a warm spot in my heart. The people are friendly, the entertainment is exciting and the park is BUSY: I'm pretty sure the entire town shows up! So if you find yourself at the Acton and/or Georgetown Fall Fairs this year, keep an eye out for me and the other In Focus photographers. If you see us, come up and say hi: you could see yourself in our next issue. As always, we want to hear from you. What are your fall fair memories? How do you feel about going back to school? Do you have an event coming up? We want to know! Happy September! KNOW YOUR SCHOOLS · In 1957, Acton Public School was renamed Robert Little Public School after beloved former principal and educator Robert Little. · McKenzie-Smith Bennett Public School in Acton used to be two separate side-by-side schools: M.Z. Bennett Primary and McKenzie-Smith Middle School. · Acton High School's motto is "Lux sit," which means "Let there be light" in Latin. · Park Public School was supposed to be closer to Harold Street, but the builders had to relocate after discovering quicksand at the school's original location. · The original Georgetown District High School building, which opened in 1889, was designed by Edward J. Lennox, who also designed Massey Hall, Casa Loma and Old City Hall in Toronto. The building was torn down in 1959 and replaced with the current structure. · St. Brigid Catholic Elementary School in Georgetown South is named after one of the patron saints of Ireland. · When Acton's St. Joseph Elementary Catholic School first opened in 1977, it was located in an old 18th-century stone house on School Lane.
