10 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,September 7, 2010 Flyers cap track season in style The Georgetown-based AGSI Flyers Track team finished off the 2010 track season recently with athletes participating in three provincial championship meets. For the first time in Flyers history, two athletes qualified for the Ontario Hershey Championships in Etobicoke. First-year Alexa Thring qualified in both the standing long jump and 50m sprint, for which the nine-yearold finished fourth in the long jump (1.87m) and fourth in the 50m sprint (8.57 secs.). Twelve-year-old Mackenzie Cameron finished fifth in the 800m race (2:36). Nine members of the Angus GeoSolutions Inc.-sponsored Flyers participated at the Ontario Minor Track and Field Championships in Mississauga. Atom girl Mackenzie Cameron was a double bronze medalist in the 800m (2:37) and 1,500m (5:22). Other top-10 finishes at this meet included tyke girl Alexa Thring, who was fifth in shot put (5.83m) and ninth in long jump (3.30m). Tyke boy Stuart Brooks finished seventh in the 1500m (6:29) while tyke boy Michael Hamilton was sixth in the 800m (3:12). Peewee boy Owen Cooper finised sixth in the 100m (22.15) and 200m (49.36) sprints and seventh SPORTS & LEISURE in the long jump (1.95m). The season concluded with two athletes participating in the Athletics Ontario Championships in London. Mackenzie Cameron dropped three seconds off her 800m (2:34) time to finish 10th, running against girls a year older. The following day Cameron ran the 1,200m, finishing eighth (4:08), with a time that would qualify her to run in the under-16 national championships. Stephanie Knowles also competed in London and finished 20th in the 1,200m race (4:30). The Flyers will soon begin the 2010 cross-country season. Mustangs win Gloucester tournament Netminder Kendal Plant posted a pair of shutouts as the Georgetown A Mustangs captured top spot at an under-13 girls' soccer tournament in Gloucester. Birthday gift Georgetown's Teagan Gilian won't forget his 14th birthday present anytime soon after his teammates handed him the Commissioner's Trophy following Ontario's 6-1 victory over B.C. at the recent Canadian Lacrosse Association bantam box championships in Whitby. Gilian, a Halton Hills Minor Lacrosse Association product, turned 14 on the day of the win in the finals and the forward had four goals and six assists during the tournament. He wore the #25 jersey at the national championships in honour of his hockey coach with the Don Mills Flyers' bantams, Peter Zezel, the former NHLer who died of a rare blood disorder last year.
