18 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,September 14, 2010 Raiders kick off 2010 campaign with 3-2 victory By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Five-on-five, the Georgetown Raiders still have some work to do, but special teams appear to be a strong point as the puck dropped on another Ontario Jr. A Hockey League campaign. The Raiders scored all three goals on the power play, received excellent goaltending by newcomer Derek Mohney and limited the visiting Newmarket Hurricanes to just one goal on eight man-advantage situations to earn a 3-2 victory Saturday night in the regularseason opener for both clubs. Rookie Patrick Megannety, Justin Basso and Jordan Reed scored to give Georgetown a 3-0 lead into the early stages of the third period, before the Hurricanes tallied twice to make for a tense conclusion to the contest, played in front of about 400 spectators at the Alcott Arena. "The first period was very nervous, everyone was getting the puck and just throwing it away, but they calmed down after that," said new Raiders' coach and general manager Greg Walters. "Our penalty-killing was outstanding and our power play came through. Today's game is special teams and we won that battle. We do need to go back to the drawing board on a few things, but for the most part we were happy to get two points from a good Newmarket team." Mohney, a 20-year-old acquired during the off-season from his native Buffalo after three years with the Jr. A Sabres, made 43 saves for the win, while the Raiders directed 41 shots at one of the league's top backstoppers, Jimmy Serjeant. "It's nice to have that experience back there, just huge," added Walters. "(Mohney) was a very calming influence on our guys, especially our rookies. We took too many penalties and hopefully they'll learn from that because you're not going to get away with it too often." The Raiders were scheduled to play the Mississauga Chargers last night (Monday) in Malton, before traveling to Markham Friday to take on the Waxers, followed by a home date with Buffalo Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Walters has already made changes to the Raider defence corps, bringing in a couple of 20-year-olds in Alex Lubchuk from Waterloo and New Jersey's Matt Nowicki, while dealing youngsters Chris Rygus to Huntsville and Sam Gray to Whitby. Photo by Eamonn Maher Bantam Hawks grab CNE fastball crown The Halton Hills bantam Hawks became the first team from Halton Region to ever claim the championship at the Canadian National Exhibition's Bulova Watch Women's Fastball Tournament, an event that dates back to the 1930s. In the double-knockout tourney, the Hawks won their first three games before losing a one-run contest to Port Perry. But starting pitcher Maddie Mayberry took over in the rematch, tossing a complete game with seven strikeouts in a 7-1 Halton Hills' victory. Catcher Crystal Marentette earned tournament MVP honours, collecting three RBIs in the final. Jaime Vieira was named the winner of the Sid Morris Trophy for her sportsmanship, effort and team play throughout the eight-team tournament.
