GHS members pitch in to revitalize the Continuing Care Complex. dent was in 1983. Today, the Society membership is a mix of men and women from various backgrounds with the executive dominated by women-- a twist from its early beginnings. According to Society president, Dorinne Wagner, in the first few years of operation the Society, "furnished plants to five churches, provided window boxes for the railway station, donated plants for the library reading room, and placed waste receptacles on Main Street." GHS photo Today the Society continues to grow and flourish by designing, planting, creating, weeding and maintaining gardens throughout Georgetown. It seems what's old is new, as today the GHS is carrying on in the spirit of its founders. The official opening of the Mary Street Parkette this past spring was part of the Society's 90th anniversary gift to the town. Wagner sees this parkette as the proudest moment for the society. "This area was left unattended for years and the skill of our members brought it back to a new life," says Wagner. The Society relies on the expertise of its members and their willingness to give back to the community. Lil Taggart is one of the many shining stars of the society. Taggart, recipient of the 2010 Volunteer of the Year award, was the catalyst for the parkette. Her accomplishments since joining the Society seven years ago are many. Her artistic and creative background in interior design lends itself nicely to the design and creation of gardens. "My inspiration comes from discusA scene from the annusion with the Society executive and finding al GHS garden tour. out what the community needs and wants are," says Taggart. Her green thumb and artistic talents can be found on the Heritage Halton Hills Normandy Boulevard garden, the Allotment Gardens and, of course, Mary Street Parkette. Warren Harris, manager of Parks and Open Spaces for the Town of Halton Hills, speaks highly of Taggart's creativity, drive and willingness to see the parkette evolve from a concept to a 10-year plan.
