24 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, September 16, 2010 Eagles fall short in rookie ball final SPORTS & LEISURE The Georgetown Eagles hosted this year's Baseball Ontario senior AA rookie ball championships at the Fairgrounds on the Labour Day weekend and reeled off four straight wins to start off the 11-team tournament. Then, an extra-inning loss to Brampton Sunday morning in the double-knockout tourney put the Eagles into the final with their rivals, the North Mississauga Bengals. Georgetown's senior rookies had defeated the Bengals for the Central Ontario championship last month and during the preliminary round at the provincials, but North Mississauga prevailed in the final 11-2. Preliminary round-- Georgetown 17, East York 7; Georgetown 19, Guelph 4; Georgetown 14, Markham 13 (8 inns.); Georgetown 12, North Mississauga 0; Brampton 14, Georgetown 12 (8 inns.) Championship-- North Mississauga 11, Georgetown 2 Catcher Kevin Millar of the Georgetown Eagles had to do a double take when a pair of East York baserunners barreled towards home plate during the opening game of the recent Baseball Ontario senior AA rookie ball championship tourna- ment at the Georgetown Fairgrounds. Both East York runners were called safe on the above play, but by that time the Eagles were well ahead and won 17-7, finishing as runnersup for the 11-team tourney. The teams were tied at three heading into the final frame before the 2-0-0 Raiders found their stride, notching five unanswered goals, including two from the 18-year-old Wilson, an Oakville resident. Josh Burnell and Travis Fulton added two goals apiece for Georgetown, with Evan Rodrigues and Justin Basso rounding out the scoring in Malton against the Chargers, who are now coached by former Raider bench boss Dan Cameron. Netminder Michael Stiliadis earned his first Jr. A victory, making 20 saves, while the Raiders struggled to take advantage of an undisciplined Charger side, going 2 for 14 on the power play. Coming up this weekend, the Raiders will visit Markham Friday to take on the Waxers, followed by a home date with Buffalo Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Alcott Arena. By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer The Acton Soccer Club will be represented for the first time in a championship game of the Ontario Cup soccer competition this weekend when the Acton Classics take on the Rexdale United Elites in Vaughan. Competing in the Ontario Soccer Association's Women's Classics Division, the Acton side earned a trip to the finals in its first year together with a shootout victory over Oak Ridges in the semifinals late last month at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough. The Classics will now take on defending-champion Rexdale for the Ontario Cup title this Saturday at the Soccer Centre in Vaughan beginning at 8 p.m. Although just one player on the Classics, Christina Carere, is an Acton resident, the team decided on Leathertown as its home base due to its central location and has been surprised by the support received thus far. They practised in Acton Tuesday evening in preparation for the big match. "I know that the Acton Soccer Club is excited and the word has apparently got out around town, so hopefully we'll get some youth teams to come over for the game to cheer us on," said captain Jennifer Granger of Waterloo, who is soccer development co-ordinator in the south-central Ontario region for the OSA. "Rexdale is a very experienced and well-organized team and it will be a tough game for us." In the shootout win over Oak Ridges, goalkeeper Kim Lee made two clutch saves while teammates Tracey Murphy, Katharine Thayer and Sheri Kralj found the back of the net to give the Classics a 3-2 triumph. The winner of Saturday's match moves on to the Canadian championships in B.C. next month. Local native Andrew Jones will take on one of Canada's top-ranked squash players in an exhibition match this Saturday as part of the festivities during the Georgetown Racquet Club's open house, which is open to the public. The club is celebrating its 35th anniversary and activities for all ages begin at 3 p.m., with squash clinics, tennis lessons, yoga demonstrations, trial yoga sessions and a squash skills competition. Jones, a former Canadian junior and university champion who's currently rated 62nd in the country, will take on 12th-ranked Dane Sharp of Ajax at the GRC main court at 7 p.m. For more info visit the website www.georgetownracquet.ca or call 905-877-0333. Georgetown's Shawn Hill lost his second straight start for the Toronto Blue Jays Wednesday night in Baltimore, but he pitched well and earned a vote of confidence from manager Cito Gaston. "Our bullpen didn't pitch too well, but Shawn did ... it's too bad we didn't have him earlier in the year to start for us," Gaston said after the Jays absorbed an 11-3 pounding from the Orioles. The 29-year-old righthander allowed three runs in five-and-two-thirds innings.
