There's plenty of excitement building for the Georgetown District High School Rebels as their new $2.1-million artificial turf Field of Dreams facility is ready for play, but local football fans will have to wait a couple of weeks until the first home game. The junior and senior Rebels visit Holy Trinity of Oakville this Thursday and then travel to Loyola Oct. 1 before the inaugural Field of Dreams opener on Wednesday, Oct. 6 against Burlington's Nelson Lords. Both Rebel gridiron teams will play in the Halton Secondary School Athletic Association's Tier 1/2 division. GDHS's senior girls' field hockey team will christen the new pitch with a home date against White Oaks this Thursday beginning at 3:30 p.m. The junior matchup will follow at 4:45 p.m. Christ the King's Jaguars were also supposed to unveil a new synthetic turf field this fall, but construction delays have forced the school's athletic department to make contingency plans. Somewhat surprisingly, the Jaguars' senior football program has dropped from Tier I/2 to Tier III this year and will play its home games at the Gellert Community Centre, starting on Tuesday, Oct. 5 versus Burlington's Robert Bateman. Indoors, CtK's girls' basketball teams begin their seasons Thursday at Holy Trinity, while GDHS will visit Corpus Christi the same day. Acton's girls started their campaign Monday at White Oaks and have their home opener Wednesday against Burlington Central at 3:45 p.m. On the volleyball court this Thursday, Georgetown hosts rival Oakville-Trafalgar while Nelson comes to CtK, both at 3:30 p.m. Acton's Bearcats get things going Monday at home to EC Drury. Raiders' bad/good starts = split After suffering their first loss of the Ontario Jr. A Hockey League regular season, the Georgetown Raiders rebounded with a convincing 6-2 victory over the visiting Buffalo Jr. Sabres Saturday night to grab first place in the West Division. The 3-1-0 Raiders began the weekend with a terrible first period against the Waxers in Markham Friday evening, falling behind 3-0 12 minutes into the contest. Georgetown rallied back to tie the game at three in the third period, only to watch the Waxers score two quick goals and eventually 4-1-0 Markham prevailed 6-4. Evan Rodrigues (2), Patrick Meganetty and Scott Wilson tallied for the visitors. On Saturday, the Raiders took the 3-0 opening-period lead this time and netminder Derek Mohney made 23 saves against his former team to get back into the win column. Wilson (2), first star Jordan Reed (2), defender Mike Sullivan and Brock Labelle scored for the home side and Rodrigues added four assists. This week, the Raiders will be in Collingwood Friday to take on the 1-2-0 Blackhawks and then host the 1-1-1 Brampton Capitals Saturday at the Alcott Arena at 7:30 p.m. Pitcher Christine Rosa of Norval Farm Supply was also a force at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles in a 26-7 semifinal victory over Dairy Queen in the Elite Division during the Kinsmen Girls' Softball League's Day of Champs recently at the Georgetown Fairgrounds.
