11 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday, September 28, 2010 THE BOTTOM 3 DAYS ONLY! Sept. 28-30 Outstanding in their field For these three members of the Halton Hills Minor Lacrosse Association, winning Canadian championships is nothing new as they added another to their collection at the recent Field Nationals in Saskatoon. Seventeen-year-old defender Jamie Dowell (left) earned his third national gold medal as Team Ontario's under-19s came back to beat B.C. 12-11 in the championship game. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Grade 12 student at St. Michael's College plans to attend St. Lawrence University in New York next year. Daryl Haynes coached Halton Hills Bulldogs' midget teams to national championships in 2006 and 2008 and since the Ontario representative was changed to a provincial all-star team, he has now guided Team Ontario under-16s to two consecutive titles after the 13-12 win against B.C. in the tourney final at Saskatoon. Local resident Derek Thomas (right) was a member of that under-16 championship side, and the 16-year-old midfielder had three goals and two assists during the tournament. A Grade 11 student at The Hill Academy, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound Thomas picked up a Canadian Lacrosse Association field gold medal as a bantam two years ago and was on this year's Team Ontario entry that took a bronze medal in Coquitlam, B.C.
