School board lauds M-SB land deal By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer The Halton District School Board (HDSB) and Town of Halton Hills have finalized details of a deal that will see the Town purchase five acres at McKenzieSmith Bennett (M-SB) School for $1.3 million. "This deal meets the needs of the Halton Hills community by preserving lands for community use, and also meets the HDSB requirement to be fiscally prudent and responsible in managing funds related to capital projects," said David Euale, HDSB Director of Education, in a press release issued by the Board Thursday. Negotiations with the Town have been ongoing for the past year, since the Board declared a 2.62 acre strip of land at the school site along Churchill Ave. surplus and said it would sell it. The Town and Acton community adamantly opposed the school board's plan to sell the land, and Mayor Rick Bonnette and council members have been highly critical of the school board's actions A key bone of contention is the fact the former Town of Acton purchased the entire 15-acre site in 1957 for schools, playgrounds and sports fields, then later conveyed it to the school board. Alcoa employees held their annual fundraiser in support of the annual Terry Fox Run, as five brave souls had their heads shaved to raise funds. Those taking part also included plant manager Ted Laing, Jerry Cater, Ron Fiddler, and Hakim Alghannous. The group raised $22,000, which was $6,500 more than last year.
