8 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, October 14, 2010 Meet the candidates The Independent & Free Press asked the 19 local candidates running in the October 25 municipal election to provide a brief profile of themselves and to state in 200 words or less why they are running. Their responses can be found on pages 8-11. Ward 2 Councillor (elect 2) Age: 58 Occupation: Advertising and Entertainment Industry Agent Past elected experience: none Why I am running: After over 15 years living in Ward 2 and volunteering with numerous JAMES community organizaCRAMMOND tions, events and charities, this is the next step for me. The next four years will bring tremendous growth pressures to Halton Hills, especially to Ward 2. I am running to make sure that this growth benefits the people Age: Occupation: Ward 2 councillor Halton Hills (2000-10); Officiating Supervisor-- Ontario Hockey Association; Hockey Operations Consultant-- East Coast Hockey League; Referee-in-Chief-- Ontario University Association (Men's Hockey) Why I am running: who already live here, to make sure we benefit from the new roads and infrastructure that is built to accommodate that growth. We want to keep what's good about living in Halton Hills and work on eliminating what is not. We need a greater police presence on the roads outside of the town to enforce the speed limits. Most of all, we need to know that our voices are heard at Town hall, by our councillors, our mayor and Town staff. I will work to engage people in all parts of Ward 2 in civic affairs by holding regular meetings with you to keep you informed of issues and developments that affect you. If elected, I look forward to being your voice at council and working to bring as much value as possible to your tax dollars. portions of Halton Hills. An example of previous dedication to the betterment of the Town and Ward 2 in particular by serving on such Committees as: Corporate Affairs; Community Affairs (Chair); Budget Committee; Economic Development; Fire Services & Emergency Planning (ViceChair); Library Board; Site Alteration (Chair); Conservation Halton and Georgetown Arena Task Force (Chair). Since being on council, rural gravel roads have been reduced from over 75 km to now a remaining 24.6 km. Railway crossings have seen improvements and will continue to do so. I am pleased to have worked closely with community associations in Glen Williams, Hornby, Limehouse and Norval and look forward to this continuing. I would ask for your vote; a vote to elect "experience" that counts. decision-making processes that affect their homes, businesses and neighbourhoods, rather than being subject to them. Leadership can be measured by accomplishments. I have served on a number of local community groups, such as the Glen Williams Town Hall Board, Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce, Crime Stoppers, United Way, Save our Hospital, Physician Recruitment Committee, Litter Bug Campaign, Halton Hills Anti-Vandalism, Junior Achievement Board and many more, and will use these experiences to serve my ward. I am committed to listening to the constituents in my ward and by keeping communication lines open with regular input and feedback from you. BRYAN LEWIS I was first elected in 2000 and have been fortunate to have been re-elected and/or acclaimed for the past three terms (10 years in total). I am seeking re-election to Ward 2 (rural area) to an area I live in and care for. I have enjoyed my past service to the Town and residents within the boundaries, especially those in the rural Age: 53 Occupation: Realtor Past elected experience: None Why I am running: As your Ward 2 councillor, I will offer an approach that: · is proactive NORM · sets priorities PAGET · is fiscally accountable · ensures that our residents and businesses are genuinely involved in the decisionmaking process. One of my goals is to ensure that residents and businesses are true partners in the Age: Vintage Occupation: Past elected experience: 10 years Ward 2 Councillor (2000-10) Why I am running: Ward 2 has beautiful, historic hamlets, such as Limehouse, Norval and Glen Williams, all of which are unique in character and must be preserved. Some are now faced with the possibility of large-scale development. If unJOAN opposed, these will change the entire ROBSON character of the villages. I would like to continue working with the GWCA (Glen Williams Community Association) and other community groups to include only low impact development of an appropriate size and where buffering is provided. I would like to continue meeting with the agricultural community and support them in incorporating green technology and new `value-added' products as the face of farming changes in the Greater Toronto Area. Advance poll dates There are two advance voting days left for the Oct. 25 municipal election. Voters can cast early ballots Saturday, Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Wednesday, Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Advance voting locations are Acton Agricultural Building (30 Park Ave., Acton), Acton Arena (415 Queen St., Acton), Georgetown Market Place (280 Guelph St., Georgetown), Halton Hills Civic Centre (1 Halton Hills Dr., Georgetown).
