Regional Councillor Wards 3 & 4 (elect one) Age: 60 Occupation: Regional councillor Past elected experience: Six years as a local councillor and seven years as a regional and local councillor (1997-2010) our Town. I would like to see our streets become more pedestrian and bicycle friendly with more benches and bike lanes. Getting people out of cars and onto the streets makes the community healthier and allows for more social engagement. The Hungry Hollow Trail is fantastic but it needs to be completed. I would like to attract more industry to our 401 Corridor to help keep taxes down and provide jobs close to home. We need regional policies that will make our 401 Corridor more competitive. I would also like us to develop a strategic vision for the rural area so that it can remain economically viable and protected from threats such as provincial highways. There are great opportunities for the rural area but we need a plan. We have yet to leverage the Greenbelt, Bruce Trail or our fantastic rural roads. Age: 46 Occupation: Electrician Past elected experience: None Why I am running: As a longtime resident I would like to see Georgetown remain a great family-oriented community. I am running in this election as I know it is time that we had a council that listens to the residents. If the growth plan is implemented as adopted by council Georgetown will lose its current identity. Wards 3 and 4 account for almost all of Georgetown so why do we have a reHARVEY E. ANSTEY gional councillor who lives in Ward two? Ward 4 has NO local councillors as both councillors live outside the ward. Council was elected to lead; so why do we use consultants for just about everything? It is time we elect new people with new ideas so that we as taxpayers can stop seeing property taxes spiraling out of control (if we have to raise any taxes the raise should NEVER exceed inflation). Council must set up a newsletter, delivered quarterly to residents to inform us of what is going on in our town. LET'S PRESERVE OUR COMMUNITY! On October 25 it is your choice to elect A STRONG LOCAL VOICE that believes in common sense and fiscal responsibility. Thank you. Harvey E. Anstey for regional councillor Wards 3&4 www. newcouncil.ca 9 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, October 14, 2010 JANE FOGAL Why I am running: I have lived in Georgetown for most of my life and feel totally committed to making our town a healthy, vibrant, safe place to raise a family and make a living. I have 13 years of experience as a municipal councillor and would like to continue serving the community. I think we have great opportunities to improve Halton District School Board Trustee (elect one) Age: 38 Occupation: Self-employed Past elected experience: None Why I am running: I believe in the children and their schools first as I have three MANDY children and I am very KERFOOT involved in their school and activities. I would never have voted in favour on such a serious issue to sell school lands (McKenzie-Smith Bennett) which was originally given to the school board from the town many years ago, especially since it is used by two schools (M-SB & Acton High School) as well as the community. Five thousand signatures on a petition scream disapproval on this decision. I also do not agree with the Georgetown South busing being cancelled without public consultation. Yes, in this day and age youth as well as adults do need to pay more attention to physical activity; however this is not a safe and appropriate way to do so. Not providing secure transportation to and from our children's school we are putting their lives at risk regardless of how safe our neighbourhood is. I want to be your voice and achieve a harmonious relationship with the Halton District Public School Board, the community and families it supports. Common sense and communication is essential. I am not afraid to think outside the box and look at all sides of situations. Age: Occupation: Lawyer, Halton Community Legal Services Past elected experience: Chair of the Halton District School Board, 2007 and 2008; Trustee for Wards 3&4, 2006-10 GILLIAN TUCK KUTARNA Why I am running: Age: 62 Occupation: Retired Past elected experience: Halton Hills trustee 2006-10; elected HDSB chair in August 2010 Why I am running: I have been chair of the board, and either chaired or been a key contributor on committees dealing GERRY with transportation, accommodaOCKENDEN tion issues, policies and bylaws to name a few. As an energetic retired grandfather, and a lifelong resident of Halton Hills, I have the experience and willingness to be your public school trustee. For the past 25 years, I have had the pleasure of working with children and youth in north Halton, and have been recognized for my dedication and commitment to youth. Seeing students succeed is one of the highlights of being a trustee. It gives me great pride to see our students in Halton Hills and throughout Halton Region reach their goals and experience academic and personal success and I'm pleased to be part of the team-- including students, parents, staff and leaders at the Halton District School Board-- who make this happen. I am looking forward to returning to the position of public school trustee representing Halton Hills with your support on October 25. My job as your trustee is to fight for the needs of Halton Hills students. Over the past four years, I have successfully advocated for more programs here in the north. With the GDHS renovation, our students now have vastly expanded course choices, and the construction of Gardiner Public School instead of the planned portapak at Silver Creek, has meant fewer portables, and a safer and more welcoming place to learn. As board chair for two years, I led a shift towards a more student-focused culture and a more efficient board. I believe that parents should not be charged for public education, which is why I called for an end to course and registration fees. I also believe that environmental sustainability must be practiced as well as taught, and so initiated funding for programs and specialist staff to make us leaders. The Field of Dreams is a great example of what we can do when we work together. I will continue to build strong partnerships, with parent councils, the Town, and our many community supporters. As an education and poverty lawyer, the mother of four students, and an experienced trustee with a record of success, I will put my skills and commitment to work for all of Halton Hills. Halton Hills trustee numbers reduced to one by board In previous years Halton Hills was represented by two trustees at the Halton District School Board. However, earlier this year the board adopted a representation by population formula that saw Halton Hills lose one trustee postion. Both Gillian Tuck Kutarna (formerly Wards 3&4) and Gerry Ockenden (formerly Wards 1&2) are currently incumbents.
