NY Times best-selling fantasy author to talk about her books on Friday By EMMA BRIDGWATER Special to the IFP Kelley Armstrong has always been interested in the supernatural; as a child, her stories would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls. Her interest and passion in the genre continues to this day-- and she's made quite the career of writing for it. Her novels have won her the prestigious status as a #1 New York Times Bestseller (U.S.), a #1 Globe and Mail Bestseller (Canada), and earned her a place at #1 on the Science Fiction and Fantasy Charts (UK). Her tours have taken her around the world and back, but she never fails to return home to her roots in Canada. Writing books for three different series and making them all popular is not an easy task-- but with her dynamic, suspense-filled writing, and characters that are easy to relate to. She started off with her Otherworld series back in 2001-- a novel that features Elena Michaelsan, the only known female werewolf, and who just wants to live as a normal human. It started out as an attempt to portray werewolves as something other than "bloodthirsty, ravening beasts." After that she continued to write and, with her newest book coming out in 2011, has published 18 novels and five anthologies/novellas. The Otherworld series is primarily aimed at an older audience, as are her Nadia Stafford novels, which follows the life of a police officer who finds herself mixed up with a small Triple P Seminar for Parents of Teens (13-16 years) Increase your Teen's Safety by Planning Ahead! Her young adult series, The Darkest Powers, is extremely popular among the teenage and adult audiences alike. It details the life of Chloe Saunders, who up until she started seeing ghosts and raising the dead, was a normal high school sophomore. She now finds herself caught up in a supernatural world she hardly knew existed, and trying to untangle a plot that stretches far further than anyone ever imagined. On Friday, Oct. 15, 7 p.m. in the Gallery of the Halton Hills Cultural Centre, Armstrong will talk about her books, have a signing, and a Q&A period. The event will have a young adult focus, but a wide variety of her books will also be available for sale. Tickets, $5, can be purchased in advance by calling 905-873-1213, or at the door.
