22 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, October 14, 2010 Meet Your Candidates! 2010 Crop for Cancer event takes aim on $100,000 goal Organizers of the Eighth Annual Crop for Cancer hope this year they'll surpass $100,000 in total money raised through their annual scrapbooking events and silent auction. The fundraiser for Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills is set to take place on Saturday, October 23 at Knox Church in Georgetown. The event originated in a Main Street shop, the Scrapbook Studio, as the owners' tribute to a loved one lost to cancer. Four staff and six regular customers collected pledges for their 12-hour scrapbooking marathon. In addition, the store asked customers and neighbouring businesses for donations, and the first event raised just over $4,100. The next year, the crop was moved to Knox Church to accommodate the additional customers who wanted to join the cause. Participants collect at least $75 in pledges each, with prizes awarded to the three croppers who gather the most donations. They work on family scrapbooks and handmade cards throughout the day. There are games, draw prizes and make & takes (for learning new techniques) as well as an on-site scrapbooking store for shopping. Snacks, drinks and supper are provided with donations from local businesses. Interested scrapbookers can call 905-877-7700 for information on registering. Besides scrapbooking, the event features a children's raffle and giant silent auction. Last year's auction featured more than 100 items including home décor, gift items, toys and games, craft supplies, hockey memorabilia and gift cards for local restaurants and shops. The 2009 event raised $17,900-- bringing the seven year total to more than $89,000. Everyone is invited to stop by Knox Church on October 23 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) to donate or bid on auction items and support Crop for Cancer's $100,000 goal. It is every adult's responsibility to help stop child abuse by reporting suspected abuse or neglect. If you believe a child has been harmed, or is in danger of being harmed, call your local department of children and family services or your local police department. If you are a parent, do your best to provide a nurturing, loving home environment for your child. If you need help doing this, there are resources to help you - look online or in the phone book, or ask for assistance through your church or your child's school. If we all do our part to prevent child abuse, we'll get to the heart of the matter.
