Raiders send four players to World Jr. A Challenge By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer No fewer than four Georgetown Raiders have been selected to play for the Team Canada East entry at the upcoming World Jr. A Challenge in B.C., providing a challenge in itself for the remaining Raiders. Forwards Scott Wilson and Evan Rodrigues, along with defenders Tyler McCarthy and newly acquired Matt Chiarantano, will be in Penticton from Nov. 8-14 for the six-team tournament, also featuring Team Canada West, the U.S., Sweden, Russia and Switzerland. It's likely that the four players will miss four Ontario Jr. Hockey League regular-season games for the first-place Raiders, including divisional matchups with Burlington and Hamilton. "That's okay. It's all about the kids," said Raiders' coach and general manager Greg Walters. "It just looks great on the organization. Yes, we'll be shorthanded but we'll cross that bridge when we get there. That's when our depth will come in." Walters said he'll call on affiliate players for those contests. Team Canada East is made up of players from the OJHL, Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, Central Hockey League, Ligue de hockey junior AAA du Québec and the Maritime Hockey League. No other OJHL team had more than one player chosen. Cornwall of the CHL had four players selected and Brockville had three. The team will be coached by former NHLer Todd Gill. Wilson leads the Raiders in scoring with nine goals and 25 assists in 17 games, while the 17-year-old Rodrigues was last week named among seven OJHLers by NHL Central Scouting as "Players to Watch" for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in Minnesota. The Junior (Kindergarten to Grades 5-6) and Senior (Grades 3-8 Amos meets were held on consecutive days, drawing a total number of athletes close to 3,000. Hector won the Amos Senior junior girls' race in a field of 190 runners, while Miehm took top spot in the Junior atom boys' event. Stewarttown claimed three pennants for overall team results in the Senior competition. Georgetown District High School Athletes of the Week are Maggie Darling and Braeden Leonard. Darling, a member of the senior Rebels girls basketball team, was selected for her strong leadership, as well as being a powerhouse on the court. Leonard, a member of the Rebels junior boys basketball team was chosen for his positive attitude and leadership both on and off the court. Christ the King Catholic High School Athletes of the Week are Irene Kiroplis and Michael McAtamney, who are both members of the Jaguars' cross country team and competed at Heart Lake. Kiroplis finished 13th out of 250 in the midget girls 3 km run, while McAtamney finished 39th out of 211 in the midget boys 5 km run.
