Rotary Club eyes Dominion Gardens for universal playground equipment By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer The Rotary Club of Georgetown continues to work with the Town of Halton Hills on its universally accessible playground project. The club had originally planned to build a complete playground at an existing park in Georgetown with the goal to provide an environment where children of all levels of ability can play and socialize together and learn from each other. However, Rotary Club president Harry Hope, said the only park that had space for such a playground was Trafalgar Sports Park. But it was decided that location wouldn't work because it's not centrally located. He said Dominion Gardens Park is the ideal location because it's central, draws lots of children, and has fully accessible washrooms, but it does not have the space for a full playground. So instead the club is now hoping to be able to add some universally accessible components to the existing playground in that park. Hope said the club is doing an audit of the existing equipment at Dominion Gardens with a playground equipment supplier to see what would be a good addition. He said the eight-inch high concrete curbs and woodchips at the playground are something the club is interested in changing to make the playground more universally accessible. The Club was originally planning to seek funding for the project from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, but may not now that they aren't planning on a full playground. Hope said they hope to get the shovels in the ground for the project next spring. A motion was passed at a recent Town Council meeting directing staff to continue working with the Rotary Club by evaluating accessibility features of Dominion Gardens playground to determine what additional features could be added.
