St. Joseph students keeping tabs on wheelchair fundraising project By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Students at St. Joseph elementary school in Acton are asking the public to collect tabs from pop and beer cans to help reach their goal of building a wheelchair. They began twisting off the tabs and counting them individually in October 2009 and the project has grown from one classroom to involve the entire school. So far, they've collected about 120,000 tabs and now, with the community's support, are hopeful by next fall they can reach the 2.5 million mark, which would be enough to construct an aluminum wheelchair. "We got the idea to do this from an episode of Extreme Makeover Home Edition, where the town came together and collected enough tabs for a person who needed a wheelchair," said Grade 7 student Amy Conroy, one of five members on St. Joe's Pop Tab Committee. Classes that collect the most tabs are awarded prizes.
