They thought about moving to King City, due to its proximity to Toronto; Atlanta, which had a blossoming animation community; or Monaco, whose tax system encouraged filmmaking. They decided to look at houses while visiting Dave's parents in Georgetown and quickly fell in love with a house in Glen Williams. "When we drove up to the house, I knew it was the place we wanted," Dale says. "We went home that night and I did a drawing of the house from memory," Dave adds. The couple moved into their dream house, where they still currently live, and commuted to Toronto for work. Symbiosis wasn't the couple's only brush with awards show glory. In 1982, Dave and Dale created their first animated Christmas card: a 30-second film starring an animated version of their cat Casper and four chickens singing Jingle Bells. Dave did all the animation and colouring himself and the project took him a month to do. The animated short aired on Citytv and made it to the final selection round for the Academy Awards, but was disqualified because someone assumed it was a commercial due to its 30 second run time. After jumping around from studio to studio following the work, Dave and Dale found themselves working at animation giant Nelvana where they While at Nelvana, Dave continued directing, which involves keeping track of all the pieces, making sure everything is done properly, keeping an eye on continuity and deciding what action goes with what dialogue. He was heavily involved in the development and creation of Ewoks and Droids Adventure Hour, based on the Star Wars characters, and won two Emmy Awards as part of the teams behind Beetlejuice and Rolie Polie Olie. "Dave can do anything," Dale says admiringly. "He's a good writer, a good artist and he understands film. If he had to, he could do the whole thing from start to finish." While Dave was busy directing, Dale worked in production management: creating schedules, solving problems and making sure the job gets done on time. "Dale is very good because she keeps all those temperamental artists under control," Dave says. "Everybody loves her." Since traditional hand-drawn animation is such a detailed and time-consuming process, most of the creative work-- designing the look of the characters and the environment, choosing the colours, deciding what motion goes with what dialogue-- is done in North America while the actual animation is outsourced to Asia, particularly Japan. "There aren't enough people here to do the animation. You need hundreds to animate a TV series," `The Quest was a section of a commissioned film for Nelvana and the Alberta government in 1980. A physically unfit knight is sent on a quest to find fitness. He got up and walked, and ran, and climbed, and rowed, and hopped. He never found fitness, but he sure felt a lot better!' --Dale and Dave Cox worked on a variety of well-known television series like Care Bears, Babar the Elephant, My Pet Monster, Franklin the Turtle, The Magic School Bus and Inspector Gadget.
