Amorpha Purple cornflower Season's Greetings `Milkweed pods may survive the winter' have been found to be highly toxic to livestock, and circumstantial evidence suggests common milkweed may, under some circumstances, also be toxic." If you are in an area where this plant cannot escape to farmlands, allow one or two to grow for the monarch butterflies and the interesting pods that will sometimes persist through the winter. Right next to the milkweed is the leftover head of a spent purple coneflower, (Echinacea sp.). The prickly-looking head belies the soft beauty of the plant when it is in full flower, but maybe is an indicator of what a tough cookie it really is in both a cultivated garden and the natural lands it finds home. Actually, the word Echinacea comes from the Greek word for hedgehog-- chinos-- which does make sense when you see the picture, doesn't it? You really need to let this plant be for the winter as the seeds are an important food source for birds for months-- gold finches being at the top of the list of patrons. Dubbed "The Road to Change", the master plan will ultimately be a list of the necessary road expansions, bridges, underpasses, bike paths and dedicated bus lanes that will be needed to accommodate the 300,000 more people that are expected to call the region home by 2031. The Road to Change will build on the already existing transportation master plan developed in 2004, and updated in 2007. That plan lists major roads projects to the year 2021 and is available online at www.halton.ca/transportation. THE INDEPENDENT & FREE PRESS A public information centre is set for tomorrow (Thursday) at Mold-Masters Sportsplex (The Hall), 221 Guelph Street. The drop-in opens at 6:30 p.m. with a presentation at 7 p.m. As of December 31, the Region had already set aside $446.1 million for roads projects that are currently underway. This year's budget includes another $109 million, and $980 million more is included in the capital budget forecast for 2011-19. About $800 million will likely be needed for the 2020-2031 time period, according to Region information. While the vast majority of that money will be spent on roads, the Region intends to examine how to increase the use of transit, bicycling and walking by Halton residents.
