The Peel Regional Police child-exploitation unit seized a personal electronic device containing graphic images from the employee's work area at the Roy McMurtry Youth Centre after receiving a call to investigate. Bartosz Furmanek, 25, the guard charged, is scheduled to appear in Brampton court on Dec. 6. The jail would not say what action it has taken. BARTOSZ "Unfortunately, we FURMANEK can't release any details about employment or payment of any past or present employees," a ministry spokeswoman said. The Toronto Star tried to talk with Furmanek at his apartment in Georgetown. He would not comment. Brampton lawyer John Thomas Wiley told the Star his client is innocent until proven guilty. "We had enough with just what we took at the scene to lay charges," Const. George Tudos told the Star. Police said the device seized at the workplace was an iPod. Police also seized the employee's home computer. The Ministry of Children and Youth Services, which oversees the youth jail, said it is co-operating with authorities. The facility holds youth ages 12-17. Rilley, a nine-year-old beaglecross, started having seizures in August. By September the seizures were becoming more frequent, and on Sept. 10 he was diagnosed with meningioma-- a tumour of the meninges or lining of the brain. Heartbroken, Roy Janke and his wife Sara Boland-Janke, Rilley's owners, were told he had only six weeks to live. If he underwent chemotherapy and took anti-seizure medication and steroids he would probably have just a few more months. Surgery was mentioned as a possibility Janke said, but he added the doctor also told them, "if he makes it off the table there could be neurological deficits." The cost would be about $10,000. Janke said the surgery didn't make sense since it was unknown if Rilley would even come through it, so they opted for the chemotherapy Sara Boland-Janke gives her beloved pooch Rilley a cuddle as he recuperates from surgery to remove a brain tumour. Rilley is part of a clinical trial investigating the possibility of developing a vaccine that would also aid humans. His story will be profiled tonight on Discovery Channel Canada. Janke said Sara, who studied nursing in school, continued searching for better options for Rilley, and online found a clinical trial underway at the Ohlfest Brain Tumour Lab at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
