Wheelchair accessible cabs can get plates By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer Special plates for wheelchair accessible taxis will be made available to the Town's three cab companies. Halton Hills council approved Ward 3 Councillor Moya Johnson's resolution to create the new taxi plates exclusive for wheelchair accessible taxis at the November council meeting. The motion still requires ratification at the Dec. 16 meeting. Town staff were also directed to investigate the benefits of setting up a separate category of taxi plates for wheelchair accessible taxis. Priority for these taxis will be given to persons who are wheelchair dependent. The cab companies that accept one of these specialty plates will be required to keep ridership statistics for the Town. Johnson said the lack of wheelchair transportation is a common complaint at Halton Hills Accessibility Advisory Committee meetings. She said the Town-operated Activan is only available to those going on trips within Halton Hills' borders, and it requires pre-booking and may not be available for emergency transport. There are currently no wheelchair accessible taxis in Halton Hills, she said. However, she recently received a call from a local taxi company owner who told her he purchased a wheelchair accessible van, but the current moratorium on taxi plates prevents putting it on the road. "I think once this becomes available, many people will make use of it," she said.
