At Your Service The library re-invents itself as a multi-media community centre By JANE DIAMANTI Halton Hills Public Library Libraries have been around a long time. Ever since some kind of written record has existed, there has been a library around to collect it. But are libraries, particularly public libraries, here to stay? Chances are if you ask dozen people this question, you will get a dozen different answers. Likely one of them would be, "So what! With the Internet, who needs a library?" As is turns out, a lot of people. According the Ontario Ministry of Culture, 66.5-million visits are made to Ontario public libraries each year. The Halton Hills Public Library is no exception; they too have been seeing a growing number of people walking through their doors. Which brings about an interesting question: Why are so many people going to their public libraries? Of course, people do check out books. Despite all the predictions that print is becoming obsolete, libraries are thriving. Here in Halton Hills, library customers borrow 40 per cent more items today than they did five years ago. (For example in 2003, 298,000 items were borrowed, but by 2008, that had climbed to 443,000 items.) But people do not come to public libraries just to check out books. In 2007, 2.7 million Ontarians attended library programs including story times, book clubs, lectures and other events. The Halton Hills Public library has seen program attendance increase by 44 per cent over the past five years, and the numbers continue to climb. People also come to public libraries to seek out job opportunities, to plan small busi- NEED help Christmas Shopping, Catering, Gift Wrapping and Pet Care? Call 905-7029459. IN MEMORIAM TUCKER, David Wayne December 5th, 2008 Time speeds on, 2 years have passed, Since death its gloom, its shadow cast. Within our home, where all seemed bright, And took from us a shining light. We miss that light, and ever will, His vacant place there is none can fill. Down here we mourn, but not in vain, For up in Heaven we will meet again. Forever in our hearts, Andrea and Ashley Halton Hills Public Library's Director of Library Services Jane Diamanti begins a series on the future of the local library, which includes new library buildings in Acton and Georgetown, and embracing the Internet. The Friends of the Library are hosting its annual Holiday Book Sale on Saturday. ness, to participate in literacy programs, to develop computer and research skills, to actively pursue life-long learning, to receive community information, and to find all sorts music, films and video games as well as books. Library staff make sure that the information you receive comes from valid, reliable sources-- something that can't always be guaranteed when searching the Internet. But if you enjoy finding information through the Internet, you'll find your local public library is there too. Through Facebook, Twitter and the Halton Hills Public Library website (www.hhpl.on.ca), your local library is wherever you are, with a friendly face and personal service that you just can't get anywhere else. In an average year, Ontarians ask over 8 million questions at their local libraries, both in person and electronically. An astounding 48,000 of those questions are answered at the Halton Hills Public Library. And when you think about it, having more digital information does not mean that we need less public library space. With so much information only available online, public libraries are important providers of free computer access. More than 17,000 people used the computers at Halton Hills Public Library last year. Also libraries provide important group and individual study space, public meeting space, and a warm-inwinter, cool-in-summer, welcoming environment for everyone to enjoy. So as you can see, public libraries have a lot to offer. They are fantastic information places, sources of all sorts of entertainment, supporters of learning and great community meeting places. Are they here to stay? You bet! So, if you haven't been to the Halton Hills Public Library, it may be worth a visit. You don't know what you might be missing.
