GLT's Christmas gift: staging of The Studio Shows, Dec. 9-11 By SAM HANCOCK Georgetown Little Theatre As their final performance of 2010, Georgetown Little Theatre is trying something different-- staging two oneact plays by acclaimed British playwrights at their studio in Stewarttown. Billed as `The Studio Shows', GLT hopes this becomes an annual part of their programming-- a chance for their membership to try something different with minimal set and lighting design in the smaller, more intimate studio setting. GLT's Youth Company has been successfully staging one-acts and full productions there for years, so the regular membership decided this year to give it a shot. Enter Alex Kanarek, who has been working in the theatre since his school days and founded the South London Theatre Centre still in operation 32 years later. Since immigrating to Canada in 1979, Alex has acted and directed throughout Ontario, including appearing last year on stage with GLT in The Mumberly Inheritance. Alex brought forward the idea of staging two distinctly character driven comedies from playwrights known for their very unique and original writing styles. Plus, both were conveniently set in rooms with beds. John Mortimer's twisted tryst, Lunch Hour, and Harold Pinter's classic comedy thriller, The Dumb Waiter. Featuring Emma Smith, Sam Hancock, Lynne Terry, Ken Smith and Gary McIlvery, these comedic gems from the 1960s, a revolutionary time in British theatre, are sure to be memorable performances. All performances are at the GLT Studio, 33 Stewarttown Road.
