Lend Me Your Ears Tooth Chatter Independent & Free Press, Tuesday, January 11, 2011 Police blotter: Driver facing charges A Halton Hills man is facing charges after a collision on Eighth Line at Steeles Ave. about 5:50 p.m. Friday. The driver of a Ford van, pulling a trailer, hit a vehicle stopped at the stop sign in front of him, pushing that vehicle into another in front of it. That vehicle was driven by an off-duty Toronto police officer. No one was injured in the collision, but the driver in the Ford van left the scene. The officer followed the van westbound on Steeles Ave., northbound on Trafalgar Rd., eastbound on Five Sideroad, southbound on Eighth Line where the driver pulled into a private driveway. The off-duty officer approached the driver and placed him under arrest. Halton Police responded and laid charges. Charged with impaired driving, having over 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood and fail to remain at the scene of an accident is Waldemar Zukowski, 38. ··· Halton Police are investigating the theft of a van and items from another vehicle at a Fourth Line residence between 2 and 5:50 a.m. Sunday. An unlocked Toyota pickup truck was entered and some items were taken including a wallet, sunglasses and keys for a Ford van also parked at the home. The van was recovered close to the residence stuck in a ditch. Inquest ordered into worker's death There will be an inquest into the death of a 44-year-old North York man in an industrial accident in Halton Hills July 2008. Dr. Dirk Huyer, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Guelph office, announced the inquest Monday. Shiv Karwal died July 28, 2008 after he fell through an opening in the ceiling to the concrete floor approximately 40 ft. below in an industrial building under construction on Fifth Line just north of Steeles Ave. Karwal was inspecting ductwork at the time. The inquest will examine the events surrounding Karwal's death and the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. The date and location of the inquest have not been determined. You have probably heard that legislation has been passed that targets drivers using cell phones while operating a motor vehicle. We all know that distractions are a dangerous combination and common part of driving on today's congested roadways. Any way to lessen the number of distractions faced daily would greatly help one to focus on the task at hand, and get on with their day. At the Georgetown Hearing Clinic, we do not condone the use of cell phones while driving, but when absolutely necessary, a hands free device, such as a speaker phone, line OnstarTM or a bluetooth connected earpiece can be very useful and help reduce distraction - not to mention allow the driver the use of both hands. At The Georgetown Hearing Clinic, we provide a wide variety of custom fit and non custom fit bluetooth hands free devices.
