SPORTS & LEISURE 7 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday, January 11, 2011 SALES REPRESENTATIVE DIRECT 416.524.6530 Home ice no help as Raiders dumped by red-hot Blades Home ice has been a decided disadvantage when the Georgetown Raiders and Oakville Blades have collided during this Ontario Jr. Hockey League season. The Blades pulled dead even in the standings with the Raiders at 59 points with a 4-2 victory in Georgetown Saturday evening for their third win on the Alcott Arena ice in the past six weeks. Grabbing a 2-0 lead early in the second period, the surging Blades, who've won 10 of their last 11 starts, were again able to stifle the Raider offence, which managed 26 shots on goal and went 0 for 6 on the power play. Duston Hebebrand and Scott Wilson tallied for the home side in front of a season-best 644 spectators. Back in the fall when the Raiders were ranked amongst the top 20 teams in Canada, they beat the Blades twice in Oakville, but both teams' fortunes have changed drastically since then. The final regular-season meeting between the Halton rivals will take place in Oakville Feb. 4. Georgetown remains in second place in its division with a 25-12-3 record, although with just two wins in the past seven games, teams such as Oakville, Hamilton and Stouffville are closing in on the Raiders for fourth place in the OJHL's North/ West Conference--- good for home-ice advantage in the second round of the post-season. With 10 games left in the regular schedule, the Raiders made another move ahead of the Monday midnight roster cutdown deadline, trading defenceman Tyler McCarthy last week to the Markham Waxers and acquired blueliner Stuart Brownell from the Streetsville Derbys in cash deals. The 18-year-old Brownell, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound Burlington resident, had six goals and 16 assists in 37 games with the Derbys this season. Tonight (Tuesday), the Raiders visit Buffalo to face a Jr. Sabres' team that has beaten Georgetown in three of four meetings between the clubs this season. On Saturday, Georgetown hosts the 18-20-2 Aurora Tigers, who under former Raider coach James Richmond are ninth in the North/West conference standings, with the top 10 teams making the playoffs. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Alcott Arena. The Hot Shots were comprised of Georgetown Hospital staff members, while the Mighty Docs consisted of a group of local physicians and the two teams combined to raise over $3,000 for the Georgetown Hospital Foundation. Paul C. Armstrong Insurance, Young's Pharmacy & Homecare and Just Cupcakes were major sponsors for the event and the Raiders donated $1 for each game admission.
