A tree grows in Acton-- inside the Seniors Centre By JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre Eight Acton Seniors Recreation Centre board members and Wendy Krever, the Centre's co-ordinator, plus other interested members attended the Town of Halton Hills's Jan. 4 budget meeting to show their support of the presentation by Centre's vice president Bev Jones, who is also our fundraising committee chair. Bev, on behalf of the board of directors, supported the recommendation in the staff report to council in which seniors would like to move ahead with their fundraising campaign for the future expansion of the Acton Seniors Recreation Centre. Hollywood may have their stars on the sidewalk but the Acton Seniors Centre is very proud of the leaves on our trees. Each one represents $50 and is placed there by either friends or families celebrating either a happy event or in memory of a loved one. Five more were recently added. Three were in memory of Freda Buckman-- from her "Lunchtime Buddies" and her friends at the Centre. The other two by Sharon Porterfield and Leah Youngblut in memory of their mother Annie Leslie. This brings the total to over 80 leaves, which total $4,000 towards our future building fund. It was great to see a very deserving person win the 50/50 recently. Betty Green has worked many volunteer hours over the years and is still on the board. She won $148. About two thirds of our members have renewed for 2011. Please come in and renew as soon as possible, so you can take advantage of the many interesting programs and activities at the Centre. For many years we had a very active Tai Chi class. Due to the lack of interest the classes were cancelled for the winter session, but if there is renewed interest they could resume at the end of March. There is a signup sheet for anyone interested. We have changed the books and videos on our shelves. Are you looking for something to read or watch for a couple of hours when the weather outside is perhaps blustery or there is nothing on TV. Check out the shelves, there might be something that would interest you. I see there is a new dinner theatre trip planned by the Travel Club. They are going to Carmen's Dinner Theatre in Hamilton for lunch and enjoying The Crooners- Sinatra, Orbison and Darin. It sounds like a great way to spend Valentine's Day. See the signup sheet for more information. Betty assures me that although we have a Valentine Celebration that evening at the Centre we will be back in time for that too. What a day! Two celebrations in one day! 29 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, January 20, 2011 Join us for a delicious evening as we highlight Halton Hills' food industry businesses.
