Lend Me Your Ears Teen seeks sponsors for pageant adventure Local teen, Selena Hoyer, is knocking on doors this month, looking for sponsors to help send her to the Miss Canada Globe Pageant this summer. Selena, 13, a Grade 8 student at Stewarttown Middle School, is vying for the title of Miss Teen Canada Globe 2011. She needs to raise $3,000 for her entry fee by March in order to compete in the August competition in Toronto. Any form of sponsorships from businesses or individual pledge would be greatly appreciated she says. Selena is setting up a fundSELENA HOYER raiser to help her accomplish her goals too. Stereo Kid has offered to put on a concert, but Selena needs a venue. If anyone can provide a space/location, please contact the number below. "I believe that I am a good delegate for Miss Teen Canada Globe for a couple of reasons," says Selena. "One reason is that I believe that inner beauty and confidence is a big part of many girls' lives and that is what this pageant is about. The second is that I need to work hard and always have confidence in myself in order to gain the respect in others." As a national finalist, representing this community, in the upcoming months Selena will be doing appearances at different community events and charity fundraisers. Selena also loves to play sports, hang out with her friends, and sing and is teaching herself to play the piano. Anyone wishing to sponsor Selena, should call her or her mom, Eileen Hill, 905-702-1479. A diminished social life is one of the most difficult aspects of age related hearing loss. Many people avoid drawing attention to their hearing loss by having fewer social contracts when it becomes difficult understanding what is being said. The result is an altered and lonely existence that family and friends may mistake for dementia. Learning new strategies to cope with hearing loss could go a long way to restoring confidence and improving communication. The Hearing Clinic recommends the following: Inform people of the hearing loss so they may modify their speech; eliminate background noise; watch the speaker carefully and sharpen natural lip-reading abilities; ask the speaker to repeat what was said if necessary, and above all else; have your hearing thoroughly tested and properly fit with one of today's modern hearing instruments.
