Region eyes different methods to ease Trafalgar Rd. congestion By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Adding turn lanes and rumble strips are a couple of things Halton Region has up its sleeve to ease congestion and improve safety on Trafalgar Rd. in Halton Hills. About 50 area residents came out to a public meeting at the Civic Centre recently to hear what the Region has planned for the stretch of Trafalgar between Steeles Ave. and Hwy. 7 over the next few years. The goal is to get traffic flowing better, reduce speeding and improve overall safety. Planned improvements that come with a preliminary price tag of $3.2 million include: · installation of left and right turn lanes at intersections (Five and 10 Sideroad) · localized widening of Trafalgar Rd. to four lanes north and south of Five and 10 Sideroads · signal timing optimization · speed display boards · oversized speed limit signs · peripheral transverse bars · median islands · rumble strips along the edge of the road · improved signage · improved pavement markings · increased police enforcement Halton Region Senior Transportation Coordinator Nick Zervos said the intersection and road improvements would be completed in two to three years, and the other items could be completed this spring and summer. Zervos said speed was one of the biggest concerns of those who came out to the first meeting focusing on Trafalgar Rd. "The simplest thing is to reduce the speed limit," said Zervos. "But lowering the speed limit on arterial roads doesn't work, you can't change driver's behaviour by lowering the speed limit." Brian Malone, Project Manager of CIMA+ which did the study for Halton Region, said the goal of the improvements is to "allow existing traffic to move through more efficiently." The rumble strips are planned to be installed along the north and southbound lanes of Trafalgar from Steeles Ave. to 15 Sideroad. "They provide a tactile and auditory warning to drivers of roadway departure," said Malone. Coming north and southbound to Five and 10 Sideroad drivers may come across optional tactile (rumble) strips to alert them they are See REGION, pg. 5 General Qualifications: · Perform physical labour requirements of the activities and work with minimal supervision. · Provide quality customer service to residents, outside agencies and other Departments within the Town of Halton Hills. · Perform all work in a safe and conscientious manner with regard to regulations outlined in the Occupational Health & Safety Act. · Demonstrate proficient use of all hand tools, power tools, four-wheel drive tractor and attachments, a tractor loader, pickup trucks and 1-3 tonne dump trucks. · General understanding of turf grass and horticultural practices. · Experience in municipal park and/or cemetery maintenance. · Knowledge of Halton Hills parks and cemeteries locations and road network preferred. · Good communication skills, including written, verbal and listening. · Ability to work outside in all weather conditions. · Provide direction to students, possess a positive attitude, and work under stressful conditions. · Dependable attendance record. · Possess a valid Ontario Class G license, Class D license with Z brake endorsement preferred. · Secondary School diploma. · Specialized courses in horticulture and/or parks maintenance and construction an asset.
