Rebel wrestlers pin down several spots at OFSAA Nine wrestlers from Georgetown District High School earned berths for next week's provincial championships thanks to their efforts at last week's Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference meet in Milton. The Rebel girls were frequent visitors to the podium, winning six different weight categories to finish first by a wide margin in the girls' team standings, accumulating 93 points to runnerup Bishop Ryan's 73. Whitney Rose (44 kgs.), Nikki Fraser (47.5 kgs.), Amy Pond (51 kgs.), Kendra Blackbourn (57.5 kgs.), Demi Swann (61 kgs.) and Kerri Malcolm were gold medalists at E.C. Drury, with Ashley Penrice finishing second in the girls' 64-kg. division to also qualify for OFSAA, to be held March 2-4 at the Sudbury Arena. GDHS's boys placed fifth in the team standings and will have two athletes at OFSAA. Alex Mackenzie won the 44-kg. class while Jay Richard was runner-up in the 72-kg. division. Drew Gilchrist just missed making provincials, finishing third at 67.5 kgs. VOLLEYBALL: Looking to capture their fourth Halton Secondary School Athletic Association AAAA senior girls' SPORTS & LEISURE championship in the past five years, the undefeated Georgetown Rebels will take on fifth-seeded Loyola of Oakville in the regional final this Thursday at Sheridan College in Oakville at 7:30 p.m. The 10-0 Rebels knocked off White Oaks last Friday in two straight sets to earn a spot in the Halton AAAA championship. The winner moves on to the GHAC title game in Hamilton next week, with the Rebels aiming to improve on last year's second-place finish at OFSAA. Georgetown's junior girls were edged out of the HSSAA semifinals Tuesday after a tough 2-1 loss to the Nelson Lords in Burlington. Acton's senior Bearcats are gunning for a spot in the provincial A/AA tourney and will travel to Hamilton Tuesday to face ACMT in the GHAC championship match. HOCKEY: Christine Bennett tallied four times for the Acton Bearcats in their 9-7 triumph over Milton. Jessica Cutting (2), Rebecca Woolford, Chelsea Pronkewich and Nicole Dixon rounded out the scoring for the 2-3 Bearcats, who'll visit Georgetown Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the final regular season game for both teams. 23 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, February 24, 2011 Rebel vs. Rebel at GHAC Drew Gilchrist (top) went on to win this 67.5-kg. match against his Georgetown District High School teammate Brendon Tabak at the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference wrestling meet in Milton. The tournament served as a qualifier for next week's Ontario championships in Sudbury, with the top two finishers in each weight category at GHAC moving on. Gilchrist narrowly missed out, placing third, while Tabak was fifth. The sixth-place Raiders lost the opening game of their best-of-7 Ontario Jr. Hockey League North/West Conference quarterfinal 7-4 to the third-seeded Oakville Blades last Saturday at Sixteen Mile Creek Sports Complex. Game two of the series was played last night (Wednesday) in Georgetown. Having been eliminated from the post-season by the Blades the past three years, the Raiders showed some youthful nerves in the opener, falling behind 2-0 just three minutes into the contest, which included a shorthanded marker from first star Mark Bennett. Then the Raiders, who lost four of six meetings with Oakville during the regular season, roared back to tie the score in the second period at three and were good enough to steal game one, outshooting the hosts 43-26. But the defending Central Canadian-champion Blades took the lead back for good with just six seconds left in the middle stanza, scoring on a two-man advantage. They would add two empty-netters late in the third. Rookie goaltender Michael Stiliadis got the start for Georgetown in game one after regular starter Michael Nishi was called up by the OHL's Windsor Spitfires. The latter was slated to be back in Georgetown for game two. Scott Wilson, Anthony Cortelessa, Matt Chiarantano and Justin Basso scored for Georgetown. Wilson did not play Wednesday after getting a one-game suspension for a checkingfrom-behind minor in the opener. Game three of the series is set for Oakville Friday at 7:30 p.m., with game four at the Alcott Arena in Georgetown Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Georgetown Raider rookie forward Anthony Cortelessa brings the puck under control before scoring against his hometown Oakville Blades Saturday at the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex.
