SPORTS & LEISURE Rebels win title but Jaguars' GHAC matchup switched to today 15 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, March 10, 2011 Drama dominates high school hockey scene There was drama both on and off the ice this week as both of Georgetown's high school boys' hockey teams went deep into the Halton Secondary School Athletic Association playoffs. The Georgetown Rebels captured their first Halton boys' hockey championship since 2002 on Monday, edging the host Loyola Hawks 5-4 in overtime as Michael Mansi registered his second goal of the game for the clincher. Meanwhile, Christ the King's Jaguars, who won the Halton Tier I crown last week, were slated to host Hamilton's Bishop Ryan Wednesday afternoon in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference final game before controversy came into play. With a berth in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championship tournament in Etobicoke later this month at stake, Bishop Ryan forfeited Wednesday's game after using an ineligible player earlier in the playoffs. Still, the Jags didn't get a free pass to the provincials due to the forfeit, as head coach Scott Van de Valk said his team was told it had to play the GHAC final today (Thursday) at the Alcott Arena at 1:45 p.m. against Oakville's Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers, who lost in the Halton final to CtK 5-3 last week. Meanwhile, the Rebels reeled off 16 straight wins to complete their season, including tournament play, capped off by winning the HSSAA Tier II title in a comeback thriller Monday in Oakville. Trailing 3-0 in the late stages of the second period, Brandon Allison got Georgetown on the board before Mansi and Derek Kessel scored early in the third to equalize. Loyola regained the lead briefly, but Allison notched his second of the afternoon with 1:30 in regulation remaining and standout goalie Brandon Bodiam on the bench to force extra time. Mansi delivered the winning marker after a scramble in front of the Loyola net. Sr. Rebels reach OFSAA final After settling for silver medals last year, Georgetown's senior girls were looking for an upgrade at the 2011 OFSAA quadruple-A championship in Newmarket this week. The Rebels qualified for Wednesday night's gold-medal match against Whitby's Sinclair (no result was available at The Independent & Free Press deadline) after going undefeated through the 16team draw to get there. GDHS's seniors defeated Grand River (21-25, 25-19, 15-13), London's Mother Teresa (25-16, 17-25, 15-13) and Michael Power of Toronto (25-15, 25-17) in the preliminary round on Tuesday, followed by victories over Toronto's Woburn (25-20, 18-25, 15-13) in the quarterfinals and Aurora in the semis (25-23, 25-20) on Wednesday.
