They're lookin' for a boss Remember the last Homecomingwaaaay back there in 2007? It was a fun weekend, with all sorts of things going on. Old friends met the first time in decades, old bands reunited for the dance, and the town was mobbed with thousands of people spending the weekend, catching up on their past friends. It was super cool, to say the least. Well, it seems a dedicated number of people have been meeting, since September, for the sole purpose of organizing another Homecoming-- this time, tentatively, in July of 2012. We talked briefly about the last time. Some enjoyed the Friday afternoon golf game, followed with a wine and cheese reception and registration at Mold-Masters Sportsplex, when many of the old friends reconnected. Saturday there were numerous events going on. Georgetown District High School held a reunion to coincide with that same weekend, so visitors could drop by the school and visit the Decade Rooms, and stroll down memory lane with old school friends, exchanging updates on their lives. Employees from other local companies like Domtar, held reunions to coincide with the visitors to town, and various groups, like the Georgetown Pipe Band, also had their reunion to bring together old members who no longer lived locally. The Downtown Farmers' Market was flooded with visitors on Saturday morning, and Saturday night we enjoyed a chicken barbecue, followed by a huge dance at the arena, featuring seven bands, some whom had reunited specifically for that event. The dance was a gigantic success. Sunday saw a large group of visitors meet at Remembrance Park to hold a service of Remembrance. In short, it was a super weekend. So now, a dedicated three dozen volunteers hope to do it again-- in July 2012. But these events don't just `happen'. Although the group has been working to get the ball rolling, there is one thing they lack-- a chairman, a boss, a Vision 2000 Exclusive Bonus: US $50 per stateroom Onboard Credit & a bottle of wine 7 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, March 10, 2011 ESCAPE TO EUROPE Ted Brown head honcho, a Grand Poobah-- someone who has the talent to pull all these people together and get the event up and running. So far, Diane Penrice and Tina Henning have been steering things, but both stepped in last fall to get it started, but not to chair the committee. "We hope to make this event a celebration of Georgetown," said Henning, "We want businesses, schools, groups, churches-- you name it, to get on board, and help make this Homecoming a giant success. But we need a chair, or a pair of co-chairs." Penrice agrees. "It's a matter of having someone pull all of our volunteers together," said Penrice, "We have about one-third of the original (2007) committee back to help, so we can draw from their experience, and the former co-chairs will share any info they have as well. So far we've got things started, but we now need someone to lead us." So they're looking for a boss-- or, a pair of bosses-- to co-chair the event. We know you're out there, we know you have what it takes, and we know it will be a challenging, but incredibly satisfying endeavour, seeing thousands of old friends converge on Georgetown for the sole purpose of catching up on their pasts. If you're interested-- as a possible chair, or simply to volunteer in another capacity-- you can contact either Penrice or Henning. Diane Penrice can be reached at 905873-8469, or dpenrice@sympatico.ca, and Tina Henning is at 905-877-3279, or linkin@live.ca Give `em a call and step up to the plate, ASAP. The next meeting is March 30. They really do need your help.
