Georgetown Bach Chorale to present The Gypsy on Saturday By RON GREIDANUS Georgetown Bach Chorale Last spring, Georgetown Bach Chorale concert groupies had the opportunity to hear Baroque violinist superstar Edwin Huizinga in an electrifying performance of Vivaldi's bold blockbuster "Summer" from his most popular musical output "the Four Seasons". This coming Saturday, March 19 at 8 p.m., this dynamic violinist will collaborate with international concert pianist Ronald Greidanus in a salon concert, The Gypsy, at 157 Main Street. Continuing in the tradition set by artists and musicians of the past, when private salon concerts were a very popular form of entertainment (Justin Bieber and the Blackberry did not exist yet), music lovers will be treated to this intimate and luscious form of amusement. This dynamic duo, both offspring of Dutch parents will begin the concert with Mozart's Sonata in e minor. Arvo Part's Fratres, the next gem on the program, is an introspective introduction and set of variations based on an oriental bell-like harmonic progression casting an almost hypnotic like spell over its listeners. It is performed in almost sheer darkness. But don't worry, Rachmaninoff is next up to wake you from your translike state. Performed by Russian specialist "Ronmaninoff" (Greidanus) with an entree of sumptuous preludes and etude-tableaux, this portion of the evening's festivities will dazzle even the most resistant among you. Following intermission the two musical Titans will join forces in a sweeping rendition of Cesar Franks' monumental Sonata for Violin and Piano. Often piano parts are seen as having a subservient role in such works, however not in this massive wonderful romantic work. It will speak to every corner of your soul. The evening closes with a marvelous spread of fine food and tasty beverages to help digest all of those scrumptious musical tones. Purchase your tickets in advance as the concert is near to being sold out, and as typical of Bach Chorale inhouse-events, one cannot purchase the at the door. Tickets for the concert and reception are $40 per person and are on sale at Foodstuffs, 89 Main Street in Old Downtown Georgetown, 905-877- 6569 or by calling 905-877-2493. 13 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday, March 15, 2011 CVC to host info night on bottle water industry If you're staying in the neighbourhood this coming March break, watch an eye-opening documentary film, Tapped, a behind-the-scenes look at an industry that is privatizing one of our most precious resources-- water-- then selling it back to us in plastic bottles for about the price of gas.
