Photo by Ted Brown 4 DECADES OF BEAUTIFUL MUSIC Council takes show on the road By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer Halton Hills council went on the road again this year-- this time to Acton where it conducted its regular Monday night council meeting in the restored Acton Town Hall Centre on Willow St. Mayor Rick Bonnette sat in the historic Acton mayor's chair, last sat in by Acton Mayor Les Duby. "It's a very nice venue," said Bonnette. "It has a lot of history here and for anyone who misbehaves, we do have a jail here down below." The council meeting was only the second one held in Acton since the amalgamation of Halton Hills on Jan. 1, 1974. The first occurred at the Acton Legion, when residents were concerned about street naming, Bonnette said. Monday's meeting focused on the future rehabilitation plans of the Acton Quarry. The Acton Town Hall was built in 1883 for $6,000, and not only served as the council meeting place, police station with two cells, and library, but was also the hub of the community's social life with dances, meetings, plays, concerts and other activities of the time. In 1977, Halton Hills council had plans to demolish the century building for a parking lot, but a citizens' group quickly formed to save it. That group evolved into Heritage Acton which bought the building and over the years have slowly begun restoring it to its former glory. In 1988, it was Halton Hills' first designated historic building. Last month the Town moved its council meeting to Christ the King School to accommodate the large crowd expected for the arena debate.
