SPORTS & LEISURE Bad start proves costly 7 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday, March 29, 2011 Jags manage one tie at OFSAA Ashlyn `takes flight' at Gymfest to the delight of teammates An upset loss to the 16th seed in their opening game proved to be insurmountable for Christ the King's Jaguars at the provincial boys' hockey championships in Etobicoke last week. The Golden Horseshoechampion Jags had lost just once all season heading into the 20-team Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAAA tournament at the MasterCard Centre and were ranked sixth in the draw. But they dropped a 4-1 decision to Alliston's Banting Memorial on Tuesday in game one and while CtK managed a 2-2 tie against #17 Leaside of Toronto Wednesday morning to stay in contention, the team spent several hours on a bus due to the snowstorm prior to its contest against fourth-ranked Loyola from Mississauga later that evening and was edged 4-3 by the Warriors. The Jaguars finished the tournament with a 3-2 loss to ninth-seeded Toronto St. Mike's on Thursday afternoon. showing at the OFSAA championships in Thunder Bay last week before being edged out in the quarterfinals. The Rebels lost their opening game to St. Ignatius of Thunder Bay, then reeled off wins of 9-5 over Uxbridge, 5-2 against defending provincial champion All Saints of Kanata and 6-5 over Barrie's St. Joan of Arc to finish the preliminary round at 3-1. The GDHS rink was eliminated after a 6-4 loss to Moira of Belleville in the quarterfinals of the 20-team event. Also on the team are lead Alex Wharram, second Ben Bradley and third Zachary Borotsik. Curling The Georgetown District High School team skipped by Jamie Waters had a strong New hockey loop hopes to have a ball By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer A new ball hockey league for youths is set to drop the orange plastic sphere on its inaugural season and it's not too late to sign up. The Georgetown Minor Ball Hockey League offers programs for kids age 4-17 from mid-April to early July with games played mostly on Sunday mornings or afternoons. Local native Donnie Casselman is one of the organizers of the new organization, which is affiliated with the Ontario Ball Hockey Association. As a long-time on-floor official with the Georgetown adult ball hockey loop and several other Toronto-area ball hockey leagues, Casselman figures there's tremendous potential for the GMBHA. "If we put out a good product on the floor-- non-contact with certified officials-- we're confident that through word of mouth the league will grow after the first year and we'll establish roots in the community," said Casselman, who'd like to host the July provincial championships in the near future. "Both myself and Nelson (Hilaro, the GMBHA's program directors) have been part of the OBHA for 20 years as officials in many centres around the GTA and we've seen what works as far as running a successful organization. In Penetanguishene, they have a thousand kids playing in their league. Growing up in Georgetown, ball hockey was the first sport we played. Just grab a stick and ball and away you go. I'm excited because this brings it back to the grassroots." Competing for registrants against popular spring and summer sports such as soccer, baseball and lacrosse will be difficult, Casselman conceded, but he points out that current NHLers such as David Clarkson, Alex Burrows, Mark Giordano and Raffi Torres, play in Toronto leagues in order to get a break from the ice yet still are able to get an excellent workout indoors with the ball. Players are required to wear a CSA-approved helmet with full facial protection, hockey gloves, soccer-style shin pads and an athletic cup. Soft elbow and knee pads are recommended. Cost to register is $149.99 per player, which includes a jersey, shorts and socks. Hilaro added that on long weekends, games would be switched to Wednesday afternoons or evenings. The GMBHA also plans to run a contest open to the public to come up with a nickname for its teams. The next registration will take place this weekend during the Georgetown Minor Hockey Association's Weekend of Champs at the Mold-Masters SportsPlex.
