Painting mistakenly put out last year 11 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, March 31, 2011 Women seek heirloom sold in garage sale By JOHN MCGHIE Staff Writer A Peterborough woman and her sister are hoping someone in Halton Hills has a painting that was mistakenly placed in a garage sale here last year. Jan Belfry, and her sister Sue Ihamaki, had hoped to donate the oil painting-- Peterborough Clock Tower at Night by Victor Newton-- in both their mother's and family's name to the refurbished Market Hall in Peterborough, where the original clock resides. However, when they recently approached their brother Bruce MacLean, (the Town of Halton Hills' recently retired director of urban planning) who was in possession of the artwork, they discovered MacLean's wife had put it up for sale in a garage sale held in the Cleaveholm Drive area sometime last year. MacLean's wife was unaware of the sisters' interest held last summer or even earlier in the year. "It is an important sentimental part of our family history here in Peterborough," said Belfry. "The artist (who died in 1992) lived beside my mother for many years and over the years she purchased many of his oil paintings." After her mother died, the paintings were dispersed among the three siblings. Ihamaki recently sent an email to her sister-in-law (the MacLeans have since moved from Halton Hills) asking if the artist-signed painting could be returned, only to find out it was sold in the garage sale. "We're hoping to reach out to your readers in helping our family find this lost sentimental heirloom," said Belfry in a letter to The Independent & Free Press.
