20 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, March 31, 2011 Your Halton Connection April 2011 www.halton.ca Recruiting and Retaining Physicians in Halton by Regional Chair Gary Carr The goal of Halton Region's Physician Recruitment program is to ensure residents have access to effective health services today and in the future. We are truly fortunate as a community that our physicians are committed to excellence and work hard to continuously improve the delivery of highquality, efficient and satisfying care to patients. This commitment goes beyond the time spent in a practice or hospital setting. Halton doctors support each other by sharing their knowledge. They mentor and serve as role models for medical students and medical residents. Halton doctors are also incredibly supportive of the Physician Recruitment program and are a big part of its success. An increased patient demand, ageing population, planned physician retirement, changing physician practice patterns and a projected population growth in Halton of 25 per cent by 2019, mean that the need for new physicians will continue. Halton's Physician Recruitment program has attracted and retained an impressive number of physicians over 130 new family doctors to Halton since 2002, including over 20 physicians in the past year. Several family physicians have also been recruited to cover long-term placements, such as maternity leaves and a number of other new family physicians have established part-time practices in the area. Halton's Physician Recruitment Coordinator also assists local hospitals with their specialist recruitment efforts, including: 'OGTIGPE[4QQO2J[UKEKCPUCPF*QURKVCNKUVU 1DUVGVTKEU)[PCGEQNQI[ 2U[EJKCVTKUVU 0GWTQNQIKUVUCPF #PCGUVJGUKQNQIKUVU The program also supports the Halton McMaster Family Health Centre family medicine teaching unit, which opened last May. The Centre will have six family medicine residents in July 2011, with an anticipated 10 to 12 in subsequent years. The Physician Recruitment program also provides on- going support, along with the Town of Halton Hills, to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care funded 0WTUG2TCEVKVKQPGTRTQITCOCVVJG#EVQP/GFKECN Clinic. The program's success is a direct result of a collaborative approach to physician recruitment that involves all four Local Municipalities, physicians, local hospitals, clinics and community representatives. Halton physicians play a vital role in keeping our community healthy and thriving. During Halton Physician Appreciation Week, the first week of May, we say a collective thank-you to all of Halton's dedicated physicians. As an additional gesture of appreciation, this year Halton Region is sponsoring Docs on Ice, an annual fundraising doctors' hockey tournament. Like other Halton residents, doctors volunteer in the community through events such as Docs on Ice, helping to make Halton a wonderful place to live, work, raise a family and retire.
