What's Cookin': A new winter tea This has been my drink of choice all winter long. I was out for dinner with a girlfriend one rainy, cold winter night in Guelph. We were eating at a really yummy Indian restaurant. When the server came to the table to ask if we'd like a drink, I quickly asked for a cup of tea, without looking at the menu, because I was wet and freezing. She asked if I would like black tea or their house ginger tea? Well ginger sounded good to me. When she came back with my tea, I was taken delightfully by surprise. First I must tell you that I am not generally taken pleasantly by surprise at restaurants anymore. I find most to be quite dull and the food merely adequate. But having said that, she brought me this lovely little tray, with a white teapot, a matching white mug and the cutest little individual size pitcher of honey Lori Gysel & Gerry Kentner that I've ever seen. I opened up the tea pot to see what was inside. I was surprised to find only hot water with a few slices of ginger and some lemon (I was kind of expecting to see a teabag). I let the tea steep for a bit and cool. Then I poured myself a mug full and drizzled in a little of the honey. It was FABULOUS! We liked it so much that my girlfriend also ordered one and then we each had another after the meal. The ginger is soul warming. The honey is soothing and the lemon is refreshing. It is a fantastic combination and very, very good for you (assuming that you use the honey sparingly and not by the truckload). I have been enjoying a full pot of this after dinner almost every evening and it has helped the winter to pass. I don't get sick a lot, but I certainly have not been sick this winter and I think this tea has helped. But if you are sick, I think this would help you feel better. It took awhile to get the amounts correct. If you put in too much ginger, it's a bit spicy. Too much lemon and the citrus is overpowering. So, try it by the recipe and then make adjustments as you see fit. Have fun and keep cooking!
