14 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, April 7, 2011 Halton Region Museum has partnered with the Limehouse Kiln Society to launch a new exhibition "Limehouse-a lime industry hub in Halton's past" at the Gellert Community Centre. The Limehouse Kiln Society is a group of volunteers dedicated to restoring the lime kiln ruins and preserving the lime industry story at Limehouse. "This unique exhibit sheds light on an important industry in Halton's past," said Gary Carr, Halton Regional Chair. Limehouse was a thriving community in the late 1800s when lime production was at its peak. Over 100 employees worked at the kilns. From 1850 to 1918 the village of Limehouse, northwest of Georgetown, played a central role in the production of lime. "We are pleased to partner with the Society to help interpret this important aspect of Ontario's settlement and industrial history," said Nancy Field, Halton's Manager of Heritage Services. "The exhibit not only depicts lime's historical role, it also explains how this versatile material continues to be used in many products today." Lime is currently used in a variety of products-- everything from toothpaste, baking soda, and chewing gum to concrete, fertilizer and brake pads. The exhibit, which will be on display for at least six months at the Gellert, features a scale model of a draw kiln constructed by Etobicoke artist and Halton Museum volunteer Nat McHaffie. There is no charge to attend the exhibit. Hours are weekdays 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and weekends 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition also encourages visits to nearby Limehouse Conservation Area where kilns or remnants of the kilns and this industry are visible along the trails. The Limehouse Kiln Society, in partnership with the Credit Valley Conservation Authority and the Town of Halton Hills, is managing a project to restore the kilns.
