10 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,April 12, 2011 Bulldogs could be a force again this year in Jr. B loop By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Opponents of the Halton Hills Bulldogs who thought that the 2010 Canadian Jr. B lacrosse champions were heading into a rebuilding year might be in for a surprise. Sixteen players from the squad that claimed the Founders Cup title in Etobicoke last August are back for another campaign and the 'Dogs issued notice over the weekend that they'll likely be contenders again, winning all three games at the Spartan pre-season tournament in St. Catharines. Goalies Ryan Kelly and Dusty Hanzelka are returning, as are Matt Sargent, Jordan Dance, Michael Licata, Connor Sellars, Bradley Kri, Dylan Gilbert, Peter Laidlaw, Seth Laidlaw, Tyler Ferreira, Mike MacDonald, Kody Lyons, Jayson Crawford, Justin Reid and Chris Haynes. Newcomers include Jamie Batten from the Halton Hills midgets and Blake Kenny of Gloucester Jr. B, who had 38 points in 12 games last season. A key cog in last year's playoff run, 20year-old power forward Brendan MacDonald, will miss the entire season due to recent shoulder surgery. Halton Hills general manager Mike Hancock said the team had a much more cohesive effort in St. Catharines after a winless showing at the Six Nations tourney a couple of weeks ago. In game one of the Spartan event, the Bulldogs downed the Guelph Regals 6-4. Reid (2), Seth Laidlaw, Brandon Clelland, Licata and Kenny were the goal scorers. Halton Hills beat the host Spartans 9-7 as Dance had two goals and four assists. Alex Fillmore (2), Kenny (2), Kri, Haynes and Licata completed the scoring. The defending national champs then defeated the Welland Warlords 8-5. Licata (2), Kenny (2), Seth Laidlaw (2), Licata and goalie Hanzelka scored, as the latter was credited with a goal when the Welland goalkeeper misplayed the ball into his own net. Duane Davis added three assists. The Bulldogs begin the Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B regular season with four straight road games, beginning with a trip to Kahnawake and Akwesasne April 2324, then play their home opener Thursday, May 5 at 8 p.m. against the Oakville Buzz, which has returned to the OLA's East Conference after a couple of years in the West. This Saturday, coach Blaine McCauley's side will play its final exhibition contest at home against the Orangeville Northmen beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Alcott Arena.
