Extendicare residents tested for TB By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Residents of Extendicare Halton Hills are being tested for tuberculosis (TB) today (Tuesday) after it was discovered a person who had been in the facility had an active case of the disease. Dr. Monir Taha, Halton Region's Associate Medical Officer of Heath, said the person was in the facility "on and off" between November 2010 and January 2011. He would not say if the person was a resident, or provide any other details so as not to identify the person. "The person with active TB is no longer in the home," said Taha. Christy Barbier, acting administrator for Extendicare, said they were notified by Halton Region Health Department April 6. "There is no verification any of the residents or staff have been in direct contact with any active cases," said Barbier. Taha said the residents would be at "low risk" to contract the disease. "It's not an issue for the public at all, it's probably not an issue for anyone at the (facility). We want to make sure that's the case," said Taha. Region Health Department staff will be back at Extendicare Thursday to provide the results of the TB skin test to residents. Taha said if they find more positive test results than expected, the testing would be expanded, likely to Extendicare staff. TB is an infectious disease spread through the air from one person to another by coughing or sneezing. It's not spread easily and most healthy people who are exposed to TB bacteria don't get sick. Buchanan, of Georgetown, was cycling in the Delrex Blvd./Sargent Rd. area about 11:20 a.m. Saturday when the small plane passed overhead at about 100 to 150 ft., heading south toward Georgetown South. A few minutes later it was back again at the same altitude flying north toward the water tower on Todd Road. "It is an unsafe activity," said Buchanan. "It was too low. He (the pilot) puts himself and the people of Georgetown in danger." He said planes are allowed to fly no lower than 1,000 ft. over built-up areas. Pilots who violate that regulation can face a fine and/or a suspension of their pilot's license. The plane is described as dark blue/navy, single engine with retractable landing gear. Anyone with information is asked to call Buchanan at 905-405-5140 or email william. buchanan@tc.gc.ca. The new little Italy. FIAT. Available. Order yours today. FIAT. Now Coming early 2011.
