10 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, April 14, 2011 Local actor featured on The Listener By TED BROWN Staff Writer When the second season of the CTV drama The Listener wraps up in late April or early May, a 10-year-old Halton Hills girl will be one of the featured actors. Mackenzie Kerfoot has been modeling since she was six, and during the past few years, she has been auditioning for television and movies. So far, she has been primarily in background roles, where she and others are part of a crowd. But this part is exactly what Mackenzie has been waiting for. "I'm playing a child version of one of the adult characters in the show," said Mackenzie. "It's a flashback scene for one of police officers." The synopsis of The Listener series centers around Toby Logan (played by Craig Olejnik), who is a 30-year-old paramedic living with a secret-- he can read people's minds. Only a select few of his colleagues and friends are aware of this gift, and he uses it to help the police solve crimes, even though they don't know of his telepathic powers. "It was really fun on set, and I got to see how they did things," said Mackenzie. "I even got to hold one of their fake guns-- it was really heavy. The set was neat, you could go from the room I was in (to be filmed) through a door and you were in a hospital. I thought it would have been a whole building, but it was just rooms." The Listener isn't the first production Mackenzie has acted in. Many were background parts, but she's been busy on the sets of Happy Town, Falling Sky, and Silent Hill 2 Revolution. "I was supposed to be in the background for The Border, and we sat in a hot room for three hours but they never used us," said Mackenzie. "I also played in Degrassi--The Next Generation, in the background during the graduation scene." One of the highlights of working on The Listener for Mackenzie was meeting Olejnik. "He was really really nice," said Mackenzie. "He was really kind, and brought us into the `hospital' where everything was happening, and we talked for a bit. He was telling us what he was doing-- it was really neat." Topping it off, Olejnik also signed a publicity photo for Mackenzie, a prized possession she has had framed. Looking down the road, Mackenzie has hopes of getting bigger and better parts, and acting with bigger names in the business. Mackenzie isn't the only member of the Kerfoot family who is in acting. Younger siblings Katerina, 6, and Natasha, 4, have also been in the background of several movies. And if her acting career wasn't enough, Mackenzie is also an avid gymnast, competing at the provincial level, and practising 16 hours a week. She's been a gymnast since she was 18 months old.
