The incident began with a physical altercation between a mother, father and their son as they were driving near Temple Rd. and Ewing St. about 7 p.m. The son pulled a small pocketknife on his father, causing superficial cuts. When the small SUV they were in stopped, the son jumped into the driver's seat and roared away, smashing into several parked cars. About10 minutes later. the man ran the family car off the road. smashing through a sign for the village of Glen Williams and plunging into a steep ditch at Confederation St. and Wildwood Rd. The man then confronted a woman nearby who was walking to her own car. Grabbing her keys, the man took her 2009 Toyota Venza and sped away. Police spotted the Venza a few minutes later heading into Acton on Hwy. 7, chased it, but backed off around Queen St. and Churchill Rd. for safety reasons. The vehicle was last seen speeding northbound on Main St. in Acton, and Wellington County OPP were warned it was coming their way. OPP found the Venza in Wingham about 9 p.m., stopped it successfully and arrested the driver. Charged with assault, theft under $5,000, two counts of theft over $5,000, flight from police, assault with a weapon, fail to stop at the scene of an accident, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle is Maxwell Aerts.
