8 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,April 26, 2011 SPORTS & LEISURE Bulldogs open new season with split in weekend play The drive for a second straight national Jr. B lacrosse title got off to a rocky start for the Halton Hills Bulldogs over the weekend. Missing several players due to school commitments and injury, the 'Dogs earned a split from their first two Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B regular season contests, coming back to beat Kahnawake 9-7 Saturday before falling to Akwesasne 6-4 on Sunday afternoon. Coach Blaine McCauley hopes to have a number of those absentees back for a big OLA East Conference clash against their frequent playoff rivals, the Clarington Green Gaels, on Thursday night in Bowmanville. Against Kahnawake, the Hunters led for most of the evening, but the Bulldogs outscored the hosts 4-2 in the third period to grab the victory. Connor Sellars (2), Blake Kenny (2), Seth Laidlaw, Michael Licata, Russell Peacock, Jamie Batten and game MVP Justin Reid were the goal scorers. Kenny (2), Licata and Peter Laidlaw tallied in the loss to Akwesasne. The Bulldogs will also travel to Orillia this Saturday to take on the Kings. Their home opener is set for Thursday, May 5 against Oakville. Coming through John T. Tuck's Jordon Sobot (20) tries to get by the Centennial Chargers' Brandon Johnson (34) of Georgetown during the Halton Boys Elementary School Basketball Tier I boys' championship game at E.C. Photo by Daniel Ho Grabbing the golden ring Twelve-year-old Ryan Oehrlein of Georgetown turned in a gold medal performance on the rings for his age group at the recent national artistic gymnastics championships in Brampton. Oehrlein, who trains with Milton-based Gold Medal Gymnastics, placed fifth overall out of 35 competitors at the Elite Canada National High Performace boys' 11-13 category after top-six results in the pommel, vault and parallel bars as well. Over the past 26 years, over $825,000 has been raised by the tournament for the Canadian Cancer Society.
