Bakery's meat pie woes continue By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Not much has changed for the owners of Miller's Scottish Bakery since a provincial regulation caused them to stop wholesaling their Scotch meat pies earlier this year. Back in March the dilemma for bakery owners Phil and Wendy Miller was featured in a story in The Independent & Free Press. They had to lay off some employees as a result of the drop in their revenue from the loss of the wholesale trade and can't afford to do the minimum $50,000 in renovations required by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) regulation that would allow them to sell some of their meat pies wholesale. On Tuesday Miller said that OMAFRA staff had brought in some literature about grants they could qualify for that may give them $2,000 towards the renovations, but that would hardly make a dent in the overall renova- 5 BBQ HEADQUARTERS YOUR HALTON HILLS Independent & Free Press, Thursday, April 28, 2011 PHIL MILLER tion bill that Miller said could go up to $100,000. In the meantime they have contacted the Ontario ombudsman for help and have collected approximately 1,000 signatures from customers opposed to the bakery being deemed a free-standing meat plant under the OMAFRA regulation. "It's so frustrating, everyone that comes in here can't believe it's happened," said Miller. He said they have been focusing on the retail side of their business and fortunately that has been growing. · ALL PROPANE MODELS SPECIALLY PRICED* · FREE LOCAL DELIVERY & ASSEMBLY* Special Pricing on Natural Gas Installation* *Limited Time Offer. Surveys will be sent out in the mail next week (May 2) and residents have a deadline of May 26 to return them. "If you want to be heard, and you really want this, then be sure to send in your completed survey. That's so important. You only have a voice if you express yourself," urged Ward 2 Councillor Joan Robson. The Region has negotiated a price with its current collection contractor, Miller Waste Systems, for a once every other week collection of garbage, scheduled bulk waste collection eight times a year and a call-in collection of metal items and appliances. To receive these services rural residents will see a tax increase of $27.34/$100,000 current value assessment. Already rural residents receive the weekly Blue Box and GreenCart services. A recent study shows that 92 per cent of rural households put out Blue Box material while 60 per cent put out GreenCart material. In 2003, a survey of Halton Hills rural residents showed that 64 per cent did not want the garbage and bulk waste service from the Region. Public meetings will likely be held during the week of May 16 with a decision to be made by Halton Regional Council in September. 905-877-8990 118 Guelph St, Georgetown (at Maple) Voted for Favourite BBQ and Favourite Furnace & Air Conditioner www.applebysystems.ca Top dress your turf for a healthy, beautiful lawn. 3 (30L) Bags Lawn Dresser Premium Top Dress Material Coupon expires May 20, 2011 OUT WITH THE OLD... ...IN WITH THE NEW VOTE FOR DEMOCRACY IN OTTAWA On May 2nd come grow with us by joining us www.whhgreens.ca WWW.GREENPARTY.CA $ 10 00 plus tax 1 kg bag Green Thumb Quick Lawn Grass Seed Coupon expires May 20, 2011 $ 49 per bag 7 plus tax · · · · · Soils Gravel & Screenings Mulch Decorative Stone Sod, Grass Seed & Fertilizer · Interlock Pavers & Wall Systems · Masonry Supplies · Wide Selection of Natural Stone & Flagstone · Landscape Accessories · Tools Delivery Available If taking on a project yourself is not in your plans, we have a list of qualified contractors that can do the work for you.
