18 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, May 12, 2011 Our little jewel "Ruby" sparkles with her happy personality. This attractive black, spayed female came to the Shelter with her sister Sunny on Feb. 10 under the category of "stray". Ruby and her sibling had been living under a deck of an old house which had been condemned and was set to be demolished in less than a week. Concerned for their safety and demolition of the only home they knew, they were surrendered to the Shelter by a caring citizen. Ruby and Sunny are identical, approximately one year old. The only way to tell them apart was the sad fact that Ruby had an injury; her right front paw was diagnosed with permanent nerve damage to Disability does not handicap Ruby the cranial nerve. Consultations ensued with numerous vets but it was determined that the removal of the front leg was the most humane way to go. The surgery itself cost our dwindling coffers $550 (through Trooper's Fund) but Ruby convalesced and is as good as new. She has made remarkable improvement and seems oblivious of her three legged status. Her bright eyes follow you and are full of life and her only wish is for someone to take her home and love her. Ruby should go to a home where there are no stairs. An apartment or a bungalow would be ideal, however, she is quite agile, and can move quickly and YOU AND YOUR PET Stories by JUDITH-ANNE KOLU Upper Credit Humane Society volunteer seems not to have a care Photos by Claudia Duijsens in the world. Please help Roxi find her forever family Over the years of writing on the animals at UCHS, there seems no rhyme or reason why periodically we just cannot get a resident rehomed. This is not only upsetting for the canine but it is for everyone involved. Roxi is a very sweet, energetic girl who is just having very bad luck. The longer she stays the more liable she is to succumb to anxiety, depression or other "kennel" traits and it is to her credit that she is still waiting patiently and as eager as ever to meet you. Eight months is comparable to 16 months in human terms and is just too long for her to have been in residence. Roxi is attractive with such an earnest little face and "oh so pleased to meet you" attitude which is natural for a youthful three years old lab/hound mix. She is clothed in a nicely marked black and tan coat with a tail that curls in a complete circle, tipping the scales at 35 lbs. Roxi would do best as an "only" ("Queen of her Castle") safe in the knowledge that she does not have to vie for attention. Roxi is sometimes wary of dogs in her Shelter domain, having had to continually try and adapt to many canine personalities during her long stay but has shown the ability to manage a playmate of her choosing. While other dogs might not always be a fit Roxi appears to be very accepting of cats, perhaps seeing them as no direct competition to her. Are you looking for a people dog? Roxi is first and foremost a "people dog". She would be in her element at home with you whether busy or relaxing, is crate-trained and loves car rides. Roxi is an athletic girl and can jump straight from a sitting position to having her head appearing above the kennel door! Roxi is housebroken, has her basic commands and for one of our walkers is deemed "favourite walking partner" as she walks well on leash. Roxi will need a fenced yard, would benefi nefit from more trainaining with her new family to focus her energy. We also feel Roxi would uld be great in agility, ty, flyball etc., So while Roxi has not been successful ccessful in finding a family mily we feel it is just luck of the draw, the right person/family have not come e to meet her but we are hoping oping one will be coming ng soon.. Roxi truly deserves eserves a chance. Call l 519-8332287 or email mail adoptions@uppercredit.com credit.com to meet her. ROXI Only $2.99!
