22 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, May 12, 2011 ATHLETES of the week Acton High School Christ the King G.D.H.S Alli Baker Kaitlyn Thompson Connor Mortimer Michael Nicolucci Cory Carpenter Taylor Richard Acton High School Athletes of the Week are Alli Baker and Kaitlyn Thompson, both members of the senior girls' soccer team. Baker is the team's striker who scored two goals in the first two games. Thompson made great saves as the team's goalie. The first game was a 3-0 win over E.C. Drury and the second game was a tough loss of 3-2 to St. Thomas Aquinas. Georgetown District High School Athletes of the Week are Cory Carpenter and Taylor Richard. Carpenter has been a dominant force on the pitch for the junior boys' rugby team as the 8 man. Grade 9 student Richard plays scrum half for the 4-0 Rebel junior girls' rugby squad and scored a try in a 20-0 win over St. Thomas Aquinas, bringing her season total to eight tries. Christ the King Athletes of the Week are Connor Mortimer and Michael Nicolucci. Mortimer showed excellent defensive efforts at the OFSAA AAAA hockey championships and scored a goal against St. Michael's College that put the team up 1-0. Nicolucci, who plays field lacrosse, is recognized for his leadership in class and on the field. SPORTS Georgetown's Source for NEW and USED Sports EXCHANGE Donoghue honoured Local resident Cheryl Donoghue (centre) received an Ontario Sport Award at a recent ceremony in Toronto to celebrate the contributions of both amateur athletes and volunteers in this province. Donoghue was recognized for her accomplishments as an artistic judge for Gymnastics Ontario that began in 1993. She was instrumental in the creation and implementation of the Professional & Operational Guidelines for women's artistic judges and has served as the manager for that discipline at the Canadian championships for the past eight years.
