Kristin Porter said about 9 a.m. last Tuesday she was walking Guiness, a two-year-old Sharpei-American bulldog cross, off-leash in an open area of the ravine off Dawson Cr. From behind, she heard Guiness yelp, turned around and saw a coyote standing next to him. "I ran after the coyote," said Porter. "It ran away from me, just into the woods." She checked out Guiness who had been nipped by the animal on his back right leg, but seemed okay. Porter said they rushed home and the coyote followed them from behind the trees. It finally left them alone after Porter said she yelled at it to, "Get lost!" She called her vet when she got home, but didn't have to take Guiness, who was up to date on his shots, in for any treatment. Just two days later she decided she would take her dog for a walk in the ravine again-- waiting until 10 a.m. She said as they were heading into the ravine a woman, who was coming out of the ravine, said, "Be careful-- there are two coyotes down there." She and Guiness stayed on the well-traveled main path and after spotting the two dark-coloured coyotes, headed for home. A Ministry of Natural Resources spokesperson says it is unusual for a coyote (file photo right) to attack a dog as large as Guiness and fears someone in the area may be feeding the animals, either on purpose or unintentionally, making them more brazen.
