Cancer, ALS fundraisers raise nearly $270,000 Continued from pg. 1 The rain and lightning Saturday morning didn't dampen the spirits of the more than 800 people who came out to the Gellert Centre to take part in the ALS Walk, but it did cause organizers to cancel the event. But despite the last minute cancellation. the Walk surpassed the 2011 fundraising goal of $150,000 raising approximately $155,000. "We certainly raised awareness about ALS and we showed that there are a lot of people in our community that care and want to show their support to our local ALS clients and their families," said ALS Walk co-ordinator Mary Jo Knox. "The money is still pouring in." A record total of $114,330-- well surpassing the $75,000 goal-- was raised by the 380 people who took part in the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Julie LaCapriuccia, an organizer of the Relay, said it went "fabulous." "Last year we got totally rained out," she said. LaCapriuccia said there were 100 volunteers helping out and that "our local sponsors were amazing." Knox said all the food for the rainedout ALS Walk was donated to the local food bank. There were several teams that raised substantial funds at the event including the Murray Machine Team (made up of Scott Murray, a Georgetown man recently diagnosed with ALS, his family and friends) which brought in more than $40,000-- currently the record for the 2011 ALS Walk across Canada. Other tremendous supporters Knox said were The Sutherland Supporters, Poppa's Posse, Bert's Buddies and St. George's Saints. Anyone who was unable to make it to the Walk is asked to mail their donations-- cheques made out to ALS Ontario (Acton/Georgetown)-- to ALS Ontario, c/o 11 McMaster St., Georgetown, ON, L7G 5G7 or call 905-8731138.
